Question on renting DVC Points

Hi all -

My husband and I are seriously considering renting points for our next trip. We are looking for a preferred view at BWV for either the week of Jan 25th or Feb 1st for a one week stay. We normally book a package through Disney itself, but it seems renting points would be a cheaper option.

My question is this - if you rent points for a stay, what happens if for some reason you can't make it at the last minute? I normally buy travel insurance, just in case. I live in New York and my fear is that if we got hit with a large enough snowstorm, we may not be able to make it out for a few days.

The insurance came in handy for me last year when my husband tore his ACL playing softball 3 weeks before we were supposed to go. He ended up needing two surgeries and fortunately, I didn't lose any money, except for the cost of the insurance.

So I was wondering, what if any, protections there may be? I imagine if you rented points in February and those points expired that month, you would be out of luck unless you could reschedule before the end of that month.

Thanks for the help!

Patty

All aspects of the rental are to be agreed upon between the member and renter.

DVC members are governed by membership rules which state policy for cancelling a reservation and how the points are handled. There is travel insurance available thru DVC- but it won't likely cover the full cost of a rental (just the maintenance fee cost basically) and may not be available to a renter anyway.

Good Luck!

As Doc says it's really up to the renter and rentee. I imagine most renters would rather not be bothered with money back guarantees etc. and you'd probably be smart to assume that there were none. When I rented points I assumed the transaction was final.

When I rent my points, it's non refundable.

When renting points I express to the person that they are locked and loaded. I will also let them purchase the insurance for an additional fee, but also explain that it will not cover the entire portion of the cost. Best to make sure you get all of that understanding out of the way with the member.

Thanks for the info everyone - I truly appreciate it!

My hubby and I do want to purchase a DVC, but that will have to wait for now -

I think I got my answer - I'll probably book a package with trip cancellation insurance instead of renting points. I'm not booking a trip with the intention of cancelling, but you never know what can happen and I just can't take the chance of losing money.

As I said, it happened to me once, and I'm so glad I purchased the insurance.

Thanks again for all your help and I hope to be a DVC member within the next year or so!

Patty
