Question on Renting a Car

Hello!

I am in the process of planning a whole-gang trip to WDW and Universal/WWOHP. It'll be my family (DH, DS10, and me), my BFF and family (BFF, BFF DH, and DD2), and my DSIL and DBIL at this point.

My family will be driving down (since I'll have a boatload of vacation time that I would need to use so I can continue earning it ), and BFF and DSIL and families will be flying down. We'd like to rent an additional car, especially with the baby joining us and needing nap time, but none of us have credit cards. All of us have VISA/Mastercard branded debit cards, however. Will these work in place of an actual credit card, or does it need to be an honest-to-Pete credit card?

We'll most likely go with Alamo for car rental, since they seem to be the most lenient with debit cards, but I just want to make sure everyone has their ducks in a row when they go to rent the car...

Alamo does allow you to rent a car with only a debit card. However the person flying will be the one that has to rent. One of the stipulations is a round trip ticket. Those driving won't have that and would have to rent on a credit card. IMO a credit card is the best option anyway and the least amount of hassle.

Renting with a debit card is not the greatest idea. Some rental agencies don't accept debit cards. If you do use a debit card, it is customary for the rental company to put a hold on your funds for the estimated cost of the rental, plus extra fees. For example, Budget charges the total estimated cost plus 25%; additionally no one under age 25 may rent using a debit card. This can tie up a lot of your money.

It's far easier to use a credit card. Don't any of the adults have one you could use?
