Question on points used for reservation

We just bought into SSR this year and have questions about banked points. We banked 96 points and used them to make a ressie at SSR in March 2008 at 11 months out. We are going to try to get a different ressie for another DVC resort in March at the 7 month window. I was thinking about doing a day by day ressie for the new one in March, but I don't want to cancel our existing ressie until we have all the days confirmed.

For the new March reservation, we will have to use current years points instead of banked points. If I then cancel the original March reservation made using banked points, will it automatically swap to use my banked points for the new reservation in March. If not, can MS make it use the banked points?

No, the banked points will not be automatically switched for the new reservation. You will need to instruct MS to substitute those banked points once you have your new reservation complete.

Make sure that you check your online point totals to verify that MS has followed your request. I have had them tell me one thing and do another.
