Question on month associated with points

Hi All,

recently purchased 160 Animal Kingdom points with an August date on them. Our desire is to go every other year to that resort and those points should satisfy us. I'm considering buying roughly the same number of resale points at either Boardwalk or Beachclub villas and doing more or less the same thing (i.e. going every other year). Thus two home resorts we'd alternate to annually. Our disney sales rep thought we should make sure we buy resale points that are also dated as August to make exchanges etc. easier to do and keep track of. Any thoughts or opinions on this matter. I agree with the sales rep - if the use years are the same, it will be easier to keep track of the points and to make reservations. If you get the same use year via resale, title it the same as your original contract and properly notify Disney, the resale contract can be an "add on" to your original contract.

IMHO, one huge advantage of the Master/Add on contract combination is the ability to freely and easily combine points from the two contracts to make reservations. If you end up with two totally separate contracts (which will definitely be the case if use years are different), you cannot combine points without doing a transfer between the contracts. We are limited to one transfer per use year per contract, so a transfer between your contracts would use up the transfer for both.

For example, let's say you wanted to reserve one night that cost 22 points, but contract A only had 20 available. You have 15 available in contract B.

If A were a Master and B and add on to it, then no problem. MS would just make the reservation for you. If contract A and contract B were totally separate, then you would have to transfer 2 points from B to make the reservation. The 11/7 month booking windows still apply.

So if you have the same UY, you buy add on points on resale and add them to your master contract??? I thought you had to take the contract number that was assigned to the resale points when the previous owner bought it?

Let's say I have a SSR contract with an Aug UY, and I purchase a 100 point contract at VB with an Aug UY. If I understand you correctly, I can ask Dis to add it to my master contract as an add-on because even though they are separate resorts, they have the same UY. With that said, I understand that I can't combine the points at the 8 - 11 month mark to make reservations because they're two separate resorts. However, if at 7 months, I go to make a reservation with my VB points and am 5 points short, can I use 5 points from my SSR contract without having to transfer points between contracts?

I have one contract number (xxx.0) and fourteen add-on contracts (xxx.1 through xxx.14) for four home resorts. At the 7-mo mark, if I wanted to book a stay at SSR, I could use points from any of my contracts - there is no need to do a transfer.

A transfer is needed only if you have completely separate contracts (xxx.0 and yyy.0).

DVCMike has the same understanding as I do.

I agree with what you have posted, but just want to make sure that you understand that buying the same year via resale and getting it marked as an add on is not a "slam dunk". I do not know the exact process to make it happen, but I do know it doesn't just happen automatically. Further, I have not heard it can be changed after the fact.

So if you want a resale to be an add on, make very sure that your resale broker / closing company understands what you want to do so that the proper things & notifications (whatever they happen to be) get done for you.

You guys made my day!!! Now I understand why people will even do small add-ons at different resorts.

As for purchasing via resale, at least now I know what to ask if I decide to go that route.

My dilemma is I just bought 160 AKV points with an August date on them, plenty to book a 2 bedroom every other year there.

I'd like to also book Beach Club villas every other year 11 months in advance.

So how do I best go about doing that.

Do I have to keep my eyes open for not only beach club points at the right number of points I desire but also dated with an August use year. There's 20 beach club deeds for sale at the time share store right now and none are dated August.

No.

To do an add on to original contract but at a different resort does use year have to be the same.

If you buy the add on from Disney, they will only sell you the same use year unless you insist on a different use year and buy at least the minimum for a new contract (currently 160 points). If you buy resale, you may buy whatever contract you choose - no restrictions on use year. However, if the use year is not the same or you fail to get it listed as an add on, you will have to manage the contracts separately.

My advice is to buy your add on directly from Disney (to guarantee the same use year and thus no worries about it being listed as an add on). You may have to wait for points as BCV is sold out and Disney may not have any August use year points in their inventory right now. Or you can look for a resale contract with an August use year and ask your broker to get it listed as an add on to your existing AKV contract.

No, you do not have to buy the same use year. If you find a BCV resale contract you like or choose to buy at least 160 points from Disney (to get another use year), you can still book BCV every other year 11 months in advance. You just won't be able to easily combine points from the two contracts at the 7 months window or to combine points for banking purposes. It will take a little extra effort on your part (to manage the contracts separately). This may not be a big deal for you. For many members, it isn't.
