Question on making changes to dates on reservation

Hi, I currently have a reservation at a Disney resort, and at some point I may want to reduce the number of nights booked on the reservation. My reservation is booked at the rack rate, so keeping a discount is not an issue. A couple of years ago requesting a reduction in the number of nights in a Disney resort reservation was no problem, but I read on the disboards in 2015 that Disney made a change to its reservation policies whereby when you call to change a reservation they effectively book a new one for you and cancel the old one, or only allow changes if the new request is available (i.e. if you want to go from eight nights to six, they can only do it if six nights are currently available), something like that. Let's say I have eight nights booked at a Disney resort at the rack rate and later I want to reduce that to six nights, will they make that change or will they only allow the change from eight to six nights if there are six nights currently available at that resort? I know that sounds odd, but sometimes they may overbook so if I am forced to cancel the eight nights and book a new reservation for six nights, the cancellation of the eight nights may not make those eight nights open up for booking a six night stay due to overbooking parameters in their booking system.

Yes you are correct. You can no longer "drop" nights. You must book a new reservation - IF it is available. Cancelling your 8 nights does not make that 8 nights instantly available to grab 6 of them in a new reservation. If 6 aren't available at the start before you cancel, you will not be able to book a 6 night trip

Are the rules the same for adding a night?

I just added a night on my AoA reservation without canceling and rebooking.
And I did it online myself. When you look at the Your Reservations page of MDE, there is a button to
modify your reservation (very much like modifying an ADR on MDE).
Click through that and choose new dates. If there is availability, that will be an option.
It was very easy -

Can you drop a person off of a room without having to rebook? I have 4 rooms but 1 room has 5 in it. One of them is thinking about not going. We are not at our 30 day mark yet but are past the 60 day.

Only if it is an option. I am staying at CR in November and was not able to book a tpv for the 3 nights that we will be there..(post cruise so I can't adjust arrival time)...2 days prior 3 nights was an option. I booked a lake view and was so bothered by it that I ended up changing reservation to the 4 nights required for the tpv..Myself and my travel agent were both informed that we could not drop a night after.
So glad that I did it at that time!!!! Now there is no availability showing at all for tpv OR lake view that entire week.
All of this has happened within the past few weeks, so if something is available definitely grab it asap!
