Question on booking vacations.

My offer for BCV was accepted yesterday..yahoo! The contract is coming with 81 banked points from 2011 and all 250 pints from 2012, March UY. So after we close I plan to book a vacation for June 2013. How does this work? Do I have to bank 2012 points too? When do the points actually get taken from your account? At the time of booking or at the time of check in? How does this work? I think I have to bank the 2012 points to be used in 2013 right?

That is correct, you would have to bank your 2012 points to use for a trip in June 2013. But you would NOT be able to use the banked 2011 points on that trip. Those points expire on February 28, 2013.

Points go by use year. The 2011 banked points are in your current use year and must be used for a stay before February 28, 2012. Your June trip 2013 would come from your 2013 use year, so you would have to bank your 2012 points into 2013 to use them for that trip.

It's not quite as simple as points being added or subtracted from your membership.

If you are unable to use those 2011 banked points before February 2013, you should think of renting them out so they aren't totally lost to you. If you are, however, planning a vacation yet this use year, be sure they use those banked points first before they dip into the regular 2012 points.

Timeshares vary in how they do this. For DVC, points are counted as used on the day of check in, not when you make the reservation. If you think of it as if you were making the reservation AND arriving the same day, that's how the points are treated.

When I first became a member, what made it easy for me was to first think about which UY my trip would take place. Once I knew that, it was a bit easier to know what I could use to "pay" for the trip.

Any trip can be paid for using banked points from the UY prior to travel, UY of travel, and borrowed from the UY after travel.

Everything, as mentioned, is based on when you go and not when you call--which is why UY plays no role in the 11/7 month booking window.

If you are going to use banked points, they must be banked prior to calling to book the reservation. MS will not automatically do this so be sure to tell them that before they begin to book your room. In addition, you can bank them online or call prior to when you want to book so its done ahead of time.
