question of legal doings in school?

Geez, that title is horrible, but didn't know how else to phrase it.
Sorry about that.

Anyway, My DD is 8, going on 9. She has aspergers, ocd, sensory problems... so on and so forth. She is in a special class that has 7 kids of different grade levels, a safe room, one teacher , one aide. She is mainstreamed for specials (art, gym) and this year for math. She is a very bright little girl.

My question after all that.. she has a medicaid coordiinator (I think that's what they call her) that provides services for her. She monthly goes into the school and checks and sees what is going on in the classroom and keeping up to date. This year our elementary school changed principals in September and he implemented new rules. ONe of these rules is that noone can just show up, they must call first and let them know when they will be there. Is this legal? I'm worried that they are trying to hide something or get things in orde before these meetings. Should I be concerned?

I would think it's more of a security issue. Schools in our area are basically locked down from about 5 minutes after school starts, until about 10 minutes before it's over.

If you have concerns, you should call the school and ask. Most likely they aren't trying to hide something, just keep the school secure. Now, if the principal said "Everyone but __________ (fill in name of your Medicard person) can come to school", then I would be worried.

More and more schools are getting tough on security. Maybe you can set up a time each month with the Medicaid person and the school that would be acceptable to both.

I agree with AJKMOM. I'm a school secretary and we have all kinds of restricitons for the students' safety. Unfortunately, anyone could walk in with a fake ID and say they are there to observe. From the standpoint of a special ed mom, I know they also try to plan these visits out becuase they can be disruptive to the classroom. My DS had a child in his preK class a few years back who needed special preparation if a stranger was coming to visit or he would melt down. If you feel so strongly, feel free to contact the school. I'm sure they can shed some light on it for you. Have a great weekend!

Security plus she needs to make an appt because they need to have a school official join her to observe. Any time I go into a room to view a class they always have someone from the special ed dept come with me. Mainly because if I discovered something I did not like they see it too so there is no question that it was observed.

Perhaps the new Principal wants more control of observations. He should in my opinion. He is protecting his classrooms and his teachers by having someone in there with your official. If that is what there doing. If he just wants her to make an oppointment and someone from his school iss not in there. I would be suprised, and say perhaps security.

You made me feel better, seeing it as a security standpoint. I forget about security, now that I live in a little town where everyone knows everyone. I also understand the point of preparing some kids for visiting people! This is why I love these boards Such great insight and help!

I actually know the Catskills very well my Mom lives in Syracuse and we were always at her boat in Cape Vincent, the Thousand Islands!!!

These boards make the world so small! My son will be going to school in Georgia starting October 18th for Customs! Syracuse is about 2 hours west of us! This is the time of year I love it up here, with the trees changing color!
