Question... Ladies only. TMI

Aleve and ibuprofen are both NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatories). They work similarly.

Thank you for all of the replies, it has been very helpful. I will definitely talk to my mom about the pain and see what she suggests. I was thinking about it and I think she didn't and probably doesn't agree with it because of the history of high blood pressure and strokes in my family. If one of the side effects is the heightening of the risk of stroke I'm not sure she'd agree to it unless I've tried everything else, which is perfectly fine by me. After going through so many acne treatments that there was nothing left and nothing even helped with my acne she did agree to put me on accutane which has so many risks involved so we'll see, if it comes down to that. I'm definitely going to try the other forms of medications first and try taking ib profen as has been suggested. :goodvibes

DD had the same issue, along with migrane headaches and heavy flow. She was 14 when we ended up deciding to put her on BC. Its been like a wonder drug for her. Lighter flow for shorter period of time, no more migranes or really bad cramps. While she still might get a headache occasionally or some cramps, they're nothing like they were and are controllable with motrin or some other over the counter medication.

Another vote for Naproxen! For me though, the generic version didn't work for whatever reason so I end up paying the higher co-pay for Anaprox. The ThermaCare wraps are really great too--if you haven't tried it, it's like a thin heating pad you can wear under your clothes and it lasts for up to 8 hours. You can get these in any Target/CVS/Walgreens, usually in the "feminine care" aisle.

I have the same issues. It got better for several months after each of my children were born, but it came back. BC doesn't help me.

Mine are so bad I do get sick every month. The docs just tell me to take ibuprofen.

I will try the omega 3's too, to see if that helps.

Honestly if I were you, I'd go on BC and take the active pills continuously. There is no medical need to have a period every single month - esp because periods on the pill are not even a real period - they are a withdrawal bleed, nothing to do with the egg not being fertilized, because there is no egg when you are on BC.

A lot of people will disagree with me - but I've taken the pill continuously for a long time now and it's been a godsend.

If it's awkward approaching your mother, try to reframe it in your mind as a medical issue (which it is). If you had a monthly agonizing pain in your elbow, you wouldn't be embarrassed to seek help for it. So I'd tell you that you've been biting the bullet for a while, tried some home remedies, and are going to see a doctor about it, because based on talking to other people, your issues seem more severe than the run of the mill, and there's no point in suffering for the next 40 years if there's something you can be doing to make it better.

I do know a very devout Catholic who started taking the pill in the early 70s when she was only 13, because her periods were so painful. Obviously if you're not sexually active, you will want to weigh the pros and cons, and maybe try other approaches first, but I bet you will get peace of mind talking it over with a GYN.
