question: if unhappy with your room, how do you ask to change?

I have read posts by people saying that when they got to their room and were unhappy with something about it (not refurbished, parking lot view, etc.), they requested that they be moved.

How do you put it? And do you feel awkward?

I'm pretty nonconfrontational, and would like to be prepared with the right polite words if the need arises.

Thank you!

If you book and pay for a standard parking lot view, why would you complain?

I'd say something like, "We just checked in and are in our room. We're a little disappointed that...and then enter your complaint. Is there any way we can be moved?"

I'd only do it if there were an honest concern. Like the OP said, I would not do it to get an upgrade. I would only do it for a signifcant reason like the AC not working or someting like that.

If I arrive in my non-smoking room to smell cigarette smoke, I call the desk and ask for a new room. My daughter has asthma, so it's really easy to ask for what we need.

If the bathroom needs cleaning, I call and ask that it be done.

When I stayed at WL, the bathtub did not drain properly. We called maintenance and they fixed it while we were gone. (Love WL!)

Just ask politely for what you need.

There is nothing called a "parking lot view" at any of the resorts. There is a standard view, and that can mean many things depending on the resort. Even if you do have a standard view reserved, you can still request for the best available standard view. That means asking NOT to be facing the parking lot, or dumpsters, etc. There are many options available for each view type.

I have asked to be changed when arriving to a room smelling of cigarette smoke. I simply call front desk and ask (very politely) if we can be moved. For the most part, they will be very accomodating and if they have other rooms, they will move you.

Oh? At AKL the best standard view is the parking lot. Unless of course you would rather have one of the rooms with a concrete barrier instead of a patio facing the bus stop. Or one of the rooms overlooking the roof and air conditioning system. When you book the cheapest room in the house, you don't have much right to complain about the view. ::yes::

If there is a legitimate concern (like your room being in disrepair or unclean) don't hesitate to call the front desk.

The original poster never mentioned anything about it being a standard, deluxe or concierge room nor did they mention wanting a free upgrade. They just asked what they needed to say IF they weren't happy with their room. My original comment is correct, there is nothing called a "parking lot view" in all of Disney. Standard view, yes, but none called parking lot view. I think you need to carefully re read the original post.

While there was nothing wrong with our room on our last trip, we just regretted our decision to go with a standard rather than a King room. So after thinking about it and deciding it was worth the $ to us to upgrade we trooped back to the front desk and explained that on our previous trip it was our honeymoon and we'd booked a King room; now that we were here we realized how much we missed it, did they have any King rooms available?

The CMs laughed and were extremely nice - they showed us what King rooms were left and where they were (only 2 since it was Marathon week!) and let us choose. We were pleasantly surprised that it was a free upgrade:D but we were ready to pay the extra $ and wouldn't have been upset if they couldn't accomodate our request.

I think as long as you approach the situation that way - if we can get it great, if not no big deal - and are very polite - that there's no way you can go wrong:D

Did I say she was asking for a free upgrade? She asked what to do if she got a view of the parking lot. At many resorts, that is exactly what the standard view is...a view of the parking lot. And if that is what you booked, that is what you should expect the view from your room to look like.

There was nothing in the OP's post about reserving a "Parking Lot" view. Some very expensive, non-standard, rooms can have a view of a parking lot. If I could see a parking lot, I wouild ask for another view. Also, the OP was not asking how to "complain." She was asking how to be polite.

????? Then why did you write this? Did they say they paid for a "parking lot view"? Did they say complain? They simply asked how to politely request another room if they were not satisifed, such as a non-refurbished room or a poor view. No where did they leave the impression they wanted more than paid for.

One time we checked into the Polynesian, opened our curtains in our 1st floor room and were dismayed to see that the sidewalk to the luau was right outside our door. People were trooping by on the way and we knew this would happen 4 times a night.

I called the desk and ask very nicely if we could be moved .. I didn't care where. The next morning we were moved to a lovely room in the building nearest the TCC.

I have been moved at other hotels due to a smokey smell, but have never encountered this at WDW.

HELLO! She specifically mentioned parking lot view. Go back and read the original post or should I have quoted it here to make it easier for you to follow. I simply pointed out that if she paid for a standard view, then overlooking a parking lot is not a legitimate complaint.

We stayed at the Poly in June in a standard view room. I asked the CM to help me pick out a good room with the best possible view without upgrading. She was so wonderfully helpful. We loved our room and view! I don't think there is anything wrong with politely asking for what you want.

Edited by me: (MermaidsMom) to remain in the Disney spirit of this board. Sometimes it's just not worth the trouble.

Actually when we stayed at the BC one year the bellman that brought our bags asked us if everything was ok with our room, and in fact I really was unhappy with the room and I said so and he said to call the front desk and tell them and ask to be moved.

The reasons I was less than thrilled with our room was that they were doing some refurb of the hallways right outside our room, complete with hammering, painting, drop cloths on the hall carpets, etc. The other thing which was not at all Disney's fault was that I had requested a ground floor room and we were assigned one at the FAR FAR end of the BC nearest to Epcot. It felt liked we walked 10 miles from the lobby! I knew that this was going to be a real hassle with the kids and going to the pool and back, etc. Plus it turns out that my DH does not like ground floor rooms! I guess we should have talked this over beforehand!! When I made my requests, I had no real idea of the BC layout. Now I would know to ask for a room near the lobby or at least the elevators.

In any event, I called the front desk and explained mainly about how the noisy work outside our room was unacceptable and I also asked if we could be moved closer to the lobby and on a higher floor. No problems, she offered me a choice of two rooms and we picked one on the 5th floor that was near the lobby elevators and was overlooking the bus stops. Still a standard view, but much better for us.

I never hesitate to ask for a room change if I am unhappy with the room. You are on vacation, you should be happy.

To answer your question, I would just say something like " we have gotten to our room and I see that we are overlooking a cemetary out our window (No joke here, that actually happened to us in a hotel in PA!) Do you have anything else available?"

I had a savanah view at AKL once that was really mostly a view of the people pen. I was not happy and went downstairs to checkin and had it changed. I knew that I would be dissapointed with the entire stay if I stayed in that room. We stayed at Poly once before and ended up with a view of the golf carts/cleaning cart parking spot in front of the building. Any time I went out to use the patio that is what I was looking atabout two feet away. It really took away from the stay, and I didn't think it was worth the expense of a Deluxe resort to stay in that room. Soured my view of Poly. Didn't want this to happen again at AKL.

Searlproudbottom,
Please continue to post. Usually this board is very kind and welcoming, but on RARE occasion someone isn't very nice. Look at all of the wonderful people here and ignore anyone who isn't (I know it's hard!)
