I have a chance to pick up a used Nikon D100.

First off, how is this camera, and second, what would be fair for a used one if anyone has an idea...

Looking on eBay, it appears that they have been selling for anywhere from $400 to $700 with most selling for around $400-$500. That's for the body only.

I don't know a heck of a lot about it. I know its fairly old by dSLR standards (4 1/2 years old now). A buddy of mine has one and has since upgraded twice, first to the D70s then recently to the D80.

I don't think I would get one. The sensor on the D50 is much better and it has some similar features, the D100 might have a few more bells and whistles, but it wouldn't be enough to get it over a D50. You'll probably be finding a lot more D100's becoming available as people upgrade to the D200 or the D80.

Over at Nikonians.org the forum page for the D100 is combined with the D200 and there isn't a lot of D100 traffic.

When it first came out it was very highly regarded and performed well. I guess if you could get it cheep enough then it might be worth it to get into the Nikon line. Cheep enough depends on what your budget includes (I would say less than what ebay has it for).

I am very happy with my XT, but this came up, and I thought if I could get it cheap enough it would be a good gift for my sister, who was a nikon film SLR user...

I have a D100 as well as a D70s and a D200. While I'll grab the D200 first, I prefer the D100 over the D70s. It just feels more comfortable to me. I have had a lot of good results with the D100 and still consider it my prime back-up even though it is ancient. I don't have a good price for you as I have never looked to buy another one but if mine should quit working for whatever reason I'd definitely consider replacing it with a used D100. That's just personal preference more than anything.

Good assesment! I have the D200, which is the replacement for the D100. They do feel and weigh just about the same. The D200 has a more pixel count, better focus protocols and some other bells and whistles, but the D100 is still a solid camera. For me the D50 didn't fit my hands like the D200 or the D100.

If you could get it for a $200 or so, it would be a great deal. The main thing to remember is about the lenses. If you start with Nikon or Canon and buy several lenses, your going to have a nice investment in that camera line. Camera bodies will come and go, but good lenses will last a Looonnnnggg time!!
