When someone pays for their meal with a credit card, how do you get your tip money? And do you prefer to have the tip as cash and just the bill on a card? Just wondering as I have been using my card more lately and wanted to do what is most convenient for my server. :goodvibes

Thanks!

When I used to be a server I prefered cash, but liked credit card tips too because they were usually higher than cash tips. I worked at Red Lobster and you got your tips at the end of the night.

I'm so glad you asked the question. I especially feel bad at restaurants where you walk up to pay your tab. I hate to appear like I'm stiffing the server when I'm not.

It differs from restaurant to restaurant. Some places you get cash at the end of the night. Sometimes it is added into the servers paychecks. I try to tip cash evenif I pay with a cc.

Also, I know many servers who prefer cash b/c of tax purposes. No flames, I'm not a server and I really don't care, just telling the truth! :)

I personally don't care which way I get it.

We have our own cash all night, with a POS system, so at the end of a shift, I hit a button this slip prints out with my sales etc.. it tells me what I owe the "boss", thats for sales etc.. it subtracts my CC tips from that total right on that paper.

I claim my tips- up to the minimum wage here in VT which is $7.25. i know how much per hour i get paid and add to that X$ per hour to reach the 7.25, then i add $20 to that and thats what I claim.

I never understood not claiming them. When you dont claim your tips, and only your 3 bucks an hour- your below any tax deduction- so if this is your only job, your really up a creek at income tax time......this way, I never owe. But i only work every other weekend

Why would you only claim the amount up to minimum wage? You are supposed to claim whatever you earn.

When I waitressed, we would get the CC tips at the end of the night.

The computer figured out how much we owed in sales and tip pool, then everything else we got in cash.

Because thats what I was taught to do years ago when I started waitressing. That you had to claim at least the minimum wage.....If you didnt- then you actually had to have a wage change, and be paid more...

I dunno but thats what I was taught to do, I add the $20 to it, so I make sure enough is taken out
