who was your reservation through? I know upgrades are extremely rare but for those who have gotten them (excluding GTY status staterooms please) did you use a travel agent or did you book directly through DCL?

Just curious! Thanks!

We booked while on board then bumped down to our AAA agent. We got upgraded from 11 to 8. :cool1:

There have been lots of discussions regarding upgrades. There really is no pattern that anyone has been able to discern.

It does appear that booking a GTY may increase the chances a bit, but that's about it.

It seems to make no difference:
booking direct or via a travel agent
book far in advance or book last minute
first time cruiser or multiple repeat cruiser
etc. etc.

It's all just random Pixie Dust

Six cruises, or cruises to be:
Two booked originally with TA (different ones)
Four originally booked through DCL and transferred to TA (Christee at OLP)
No GTY status for any
No specific stateroom requested for any
Booked Cat 11, upgraded to 5 and 6 for six cruises
Several different situations

6 cruises - all booked a year in advace. None were quarantees. All were CAT9 and paid off at least 2 months before payment due date. All used TA except for 1st cruise. Only upgrade was on the first cruise booked directly with DCL- CAT9 to CAT6. All were August cruises.

No experience, but a question I hope someone can answer. We're sailing 9/11/05 and our reservation already shows a cabin # assignment (we booked through DU). Is it possible that when we receive our cruise documents that we could still receive an upgrade? I'm not holding my breath, but it sure would be nice!

I've been told that the main reason for an upgrade is when a specific stateroom you've been assigned has a problem/needs repair. Other than that the only other upgrade is for GTY status staterooms.

I was thinking though that if DCL needs to fit in those GTY people, maybe they would upgrade the previously assigned staterooms who paid more than the GTY people. So, I thought it was easier to upgrade a stateroom booked directly through DCL rather than notifying a TA of the new assignment. Does any of this make sense???

I think DCL deliberately keeps the methods for assigning upgrades a secret - For example if booking with DCL increased the chance of an upgrade and word got out, then it would cause a lot more people to book direct with DCL and skip the travel agent. Now this might seem like a good thing, but if DCL got a bad rep with travel agents, they would steer their clients towards other cruise lines. As far as DCL is concerned, when a cabin is upgraded, they have to notify someone, and it is no more work to notify an individual than it would be to notify a TA.

It seems that upgrades can happen for a number of reasons. After reading this board for a couple of years I would say that in some cases they just directly upgrade a person who booked a GTY, but in other cases, they will upgrade someone who did pay a higher price to free up a room to assign to someone who booked GTY.

Also based on past postings here, an upgrade can occur at anytime. You may find out months in advance, you may find out when you get your documents. You may get your documents with a stateroom printed on them but find out at the port while you are boarding that you have been upgraded. So it can happen at any time.

It is in DCLs best interest to keep it a random event. If the DISBoards ever figured out a pattern to upgrades, you can bet that everyone would be taking advantage of it. For example, say that it was discovered that paying early increased the chance of an upgrade. Well then everyone is going to start paying early, but not everyone can be upgraded, so now everyone is upset that they paid early and didn't get upgraded.

I have read hundreds of posts on the subject of upgrade. Many many people on here have searched, analyzed and reviewed all the information on upgrades availabe and the only conclusion that can be drawn is that it is random.

We booked through a TA, 11 months in advance, and got a cabin assignment then. All documents had that cabin number, but Disney called our TA 8 days before and told them we had been upgraded from category 10 to category 6.

I sincerely think they put all the people in lower categories and draw them out of a hat for upgrades. (probably done on a computer using the same software the Jury Commissioner's office uses to pick jurors, except that this is a good thing to get picked for :Pinkbounc )

I must confess....

We agree with RENC - that there is NO pattern to obtaining an upgrade. I think DCL does a prety good job of it - that is keeping it diplomatic and uncontroversial by throughly randomizing it. I used to think the same way - does booking direct or over paying make any difference? Not that I would deliberately overpay.

At any rate - it is also reassuring that the COUTRESY exists for a lucky few to recieve a free bump. Now if only a few of us would get a random "free ride"... IE it would be interesting if one each and every cruise they gave ONE (or more) cabin(s) a complete refund PLUS zeroed the ship charge account - that would be something... eh? Not that I've EVER heard of a cruise line ever dong that!

Just a little wild eyed thinking. Maybe we could start something if enough of us started squaking - but then again - they might ratchet up the fares to offset the losses?! :rotfl:

We were upgraded on our 1st Disney Cruise on the 9-11-03 Wonder from a Cat 6 to a Cat 4. We booked a military rated directly through DCL.

We just found out that we've been upgraded for our 3rd Disney Cruise on the 7-30-05 Magic from a Cat 6 to a Cat 4. We booked with All Seasons Travel and rebooked onboard last summer (Magic 7-3-04 Cat 8...no upgrade...also booked through All Seas) to take advantage of the onboard booking discounts.

We were on June 9 Wonder. We booked 7 months ahead for a specific Category 8 room on Deck 5. We received our cruise documents with that specific room number. Then a few days after that, checked online and we were changed to a category 5. We also received a phone call a few days before boarding telling us to change our cruise documents to reflect the upgraded new room. Nice gift from DCL!
