Question for those who colour their own hair

So I am considering colouring my hair myself. I haven't done this for years, and I'm a little nervous. I've gone to the salon to have it done for the last few years but now that I'm not working I don't feel it is so dire to have it done professionally. Besides which I think $140 is highway robbery just to get a colour and cut.

I picked up a pkg of Natural Instincts because it is semi permanent on the theory that if it doesn't look good it will at least wash out more quickly.
Does anyone have any experience using this particular brand, and could you give me any tips?

1)put lotion on your forehead -back of the neck and ears so if you spill some on your face it will come off easily.
2)Go shirtless or wear a really old shirt that you don't have to pull over your head.
3)Do roots first and use a comb to comb it through the roots.
