I got my very first job, and my first purchase will be a cell phone. I was thinking about having my grandmother add me on to her plan for $20 a month, and share her 1000 minutes (plus free nights and weekends) a month with her and my mom. But I have no texting capabilities. And the service kind of stinks up here in the sticks. I was looking at t-mobile and for $35 a month I can get 300 minutes, free nights and weekends and 400 incoming and outgoing text messages. Do any of you have t-mobile? Is this going to be a wise way to spend my 7.50 an hour that I'll be making? I'm also trying to save for drivers-ed, but a cell phone is a precious commodity that my parents said I have to pay for myself!

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Twinkles,

Just remember, $35.00 will be over $40 when fees and taxes are added on, and $7.50 will be more like $6.00 after taxes. So you'll be trading ~7 hours of your life each month for the opportunity to text message!

Sooooooo, what you're saying is, I should suck it up and maybe set aside 5 extra dollars every month so I can have 50 outgoing texts?(they're .10 on her plan) And pay my grandmother the even 20?

Maybe this is why my parents made me pay for my own cell in the first place. :lmao:

We have T mobile and are very pleased with their service :thumbsup2
Most of our sons friends have the Tmobile plan as well so they don't cost me a fortune when they talk to them on their cells.
Just go through Grandma and give the extra text money to her as it will be cheaper in the long run! Just take it easy on the text messaging and you will be fine!

I have T-mobile and my service sucks, thank goodness my contract is up next month cause I hate it!

We have TMobile and love it! Right now they are having a promotion for unlimited text messaging for $9.95 a month to anyone, not just TMobile subscribers. So, you should be able to get both on Granny's plan for $20.00 plus taxes, etc. Go to TMobile and find out!!

we have t-mobile and love it... i text a lot also in fact at the end of march i am going to get the sidekick

I love T-mobile and my Sidekick. Get connectivity. I actually do more texting than talking so the unlimited Text plan I have is great.

You need to think about this before you committ.

Is the nights and weekends fro 9pm-6am? Some companies thats the times- others, like mine is 7pm-8am. Make sure you check!

Texting- you never pay for incoming- only outgoing. I'm not sure if t-mobile offers this- but my company and the other one thats big here, offers texts from computers- they are not counted towards your monthly text messages
Also- remember 50 text messages is NOT a lot! If you get in a conversation with someone- hold your hat, because you can rack them up quickly! I generally use about 700 text messages a month, and have the unlimited text plan. I text WAY more than I talk...DBF also has the unlimited plan...thankfully!

If you have the option of adding onto your grandmothers plan, to me thats wiser- its cheaper for you, HOWEVER dont text for 10 cents a text message....not wise!

If your choice is drivers ed or a cell phone- go with the drivers ed, I know everyone 'has to have' a cell phone now adays, but you will be showing your parents how much more responsible you are for saving for the drivers ed, and not spending your entire check for a week on a cell phone- that might just be enough to push them into getting the phone for you???

Just some thoughts... FYI- my cell company is us cellular, but I think they're only in new england
