Question for the Tipsters

I have read on other boards tips that suggest visiting other WDW resorts and hanging out at their pool for an afternoon. My wife and I are going in September to celebrate our 15 year anniversary and thought about doing this one afternoon before a dinner reservation at a particular hotel.

My question is if this is allowed. We will be WDW resort guests staying at another hotel but not that one. I have searched all over the web and Disney's website to see if there are any policies that forbid this. Does anyone know if there is anything wrong? Not necessarily looking for an opinion on what you think is right or wrong, just want to know if it is against the rules. Thanks for your help!

Pool hopping (as it's called) IS allowed most of the time. The only time I know of it not being okay is during peak season. Ask a CM at your resort. They should be able to tell you whether or not pool hopping is closed when you're there.

Thanks Gracey, that's good to know. We are going in September and the week we are there is traditionally one of the slowest of the year so it probably won't be an issue but we'll check.

Pool hopping is not permitted except for "sister" resorts. Both sides of Port Orleans are considered one, and all three of the All-Stars are considered one. As well as the Yacht and Beach Clubs.

The pools are intended for the Guests at that Resort. Even more so for the pools at the Deluxe Resorts as the Guests there are paying for use of their pool. Often at the higher-end pools you have to show the specific resort ID and will get a wristband to allow you to use this pool.

The only people allowed to 'pool hop' are DVC members and even then, it's only at certain pools. WDW guests are allowed to visit other resorts, but are not allowed in the pool. There are people who break this rule, but as Disney states, you are not allowed to 'pool hop'.

Whoops... I forgot that this was the case! I usually go with DVC members or on DVC points so I was thinking in that direction. Sorry if I led you astray OP! :guilty:

Definitely not allowed per Disney's own website:
http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/recreation/pools/

'Please note that pools are for use only for Guests of that specific Resort hotel. Lifeguards are on duty at select pools during daylight hours.'

OP: I have personally been asked for my room key more than once to identify that I am staying at that specific resort and have seen others thrown out when the ID numbers on their room key did not match for that resort. I've been asked to show my key by the lifeguards at WL, BW, and YC. I've seen people thrown out at BW and WL and you can't even get into Stormalong Bay at BC/YC without showing your room key at the gate. I've also seen people thrown out of the pool at the Poly. I wasn't staying there, just eating food from Cap'n Cook's outside, when I saw them yelling as they were being escorted out. You can look around, shop, and eat at any resort, but can't use their pools. You can see why: everyone would want to take an Epcot break and use Storm Along Bay or take a MK break and use the pools at GF or Poly and it would be too crowded and the people actually paying to stay there wouldn't be able to find pool chairs or use their own pool. The only people allowed to pool hop are DVC members and even they have certain restrictions (black out dates, no pool hopping to Stormalong Bay or Kidani at AKL). I'm usually down there in Sept, Oct, early Dec, Jan, and early May, so never at busy times of the year.

Each resort also has signs at the pool stating that the pool is only for the use of guests staying at that particular resort. Here's one of the signs:

You can most definitely "visit" the ther resort pools you just can't use them...at least that is how I understand it...is this right? When we did ohana we walked around the beach after and took some photos but didn't use the pool without any questions.

Yeah, you can walk by (except at Stormalong Bay unless you have a really good story and an understanding CM) and take pictures, but you aren't supposed to swim in a pool of a resort that you're not staying at.

The "sister" resorts were mentioned - Yacht and Beach, AllStars... I'm wondering if now that Art of Animation has opened and connected to Pop Century via the Generation Gap bridge if the guests of those resorts will be allowed to pool hop back and forth.

I am pretty sure Pop & AoA are not considered "sister resorts". I could be wrong, but the pool at AoA has a gate around it and its been confirmed on the boards by some people who have already stayed there, that you have to have your room key just to get into the gate. I hear that pool at AoA is awesome! Can't wait to stay there someday!

It's frowned upon, but you can do it. People here on the DIS get pretty upset about it happening because it's not encouraged by Disney.

Staff don't check people to see if guests really belong to the resort or not. If Disney was really worried about it I believe they'd make it so that certain parts of resorts were card access only. I have yet to do it but always walk around and check out a resort after dining there.

you must show your room key at YC/BC and you will be given a wristband. I heard they also do this at Poly and Boardwalk. You swim where you pay to stay. It is not fair if I am paying Deluxe prices for you to come from value or moderate and even some cases off site

Excuse me, but yes the lifeguards do random checks. I've had to show my room key at WL, BW, and YC. I have personally seen people kicked out of the pools at WL and BW and seen people denied entrance at the gate at YC.

First time I've ever heard of it. :confused3

Well I assure you they do. I doubt if they would at a Value or Moderate, but they do at the Deluxes sometimes. Than again my understanding is that the new Art of Animation main pool is gated and requires a key to enter and that's a value resort. The time we had to show room keys at WL, they had to see a room key for each person. I had taken my eldest son and GD down there. My son took my GD swimming, while I went into the laundry room to wash clothes. Since I had my room key with me, my son left theirs in the room. A little while later, he came into the laundry room, telling me I had to come out to show my room key to the life guard to prove we were staying there. When I did, the lifeguard said he still had to see my son's and GD's keys, because just because I was staying there did not necessarily mean they were. I had to run up to the room to get their keys. Two families were kicked out of the pool that day that weren't staying there. One left quietly, but the dad of the other family caused a big scene, saying that with the money he was spending for his vacation he could swim where ever he d-mn well pleased, and demanded a manger be called, When the manager showed up he demanded an apology from the life guard for embarrassing his family, instead the manager stood by his lifeguards and the man was told to leave or security would escort them out. The last time I stayed at the YC, I had to show my key just to get into the pool area to take some pictures. I was wearing pants and a hoodie because it was Dec and cold (some people were still swimming however). It was obvious I wasn't going swimming but the CM manning that gate said he still had to see my room key if I wanted to get up close to the pool. I also found out something I didn't know that trip. Swan/Dolphin use colored towels whereas all WDW towels are white. One day it was warmer, so I decided to swim. The people walking in the gate just ahead of me were stopped and not allowed in. The CM made a comment that it wasn't smart to try to sneak in Storm Along Bay using Swan/Dolphin towels, since they were so easily recognizable. lol Not only did those people not have a YC/BC KTTW, but they had the Swan/Dolphin towels peeking out of the top of their beach bag.lol I couldn't believe the CM recognized them like that, just by color.

People have posted that they have asked lifeguards if it's OK if they have guests in the pool and lifeguards allowed it, but it depends on how crowded the pool is and is strictly up to the lifeguards on duty that day.

OT: out of curiosity I asked one of the lifeguards how they knew what resort a person was staying at, since the resort is not listed on the room key. He informed me that each resort has it's own code that is printed on a person's KTTW.

Well good to know, I guess they are concerned. Makes sense especially now that Disney seems to be getting more and more crowded.
