What's the big deal with Hemi Engines?

When dh and I picked up our 04 Dodge Durango last week, some of the Dodge Salesmen, dh and the other male customers were yuking it up about Hemi engines in the showroom.

Another wife and I were wondering what's the big deal. I mean really I don't get it?

BTW, the Magnums look like mini death cars:o

Back in the late 60's the Hemi engine made a difference. Nowadays it's just a marketing thing.

Easily a marketing ploy. When they start putting them in station wagons then you know it's a gimmick.

You know that stupid commercial"Son can you say Hemi? Ughhh Can we say shuddup already:jester:

Hey! Is that a ......:D Oh, never mind.

Hemi doesn't do much for me either. Used to be more impressed with the Cummins Diesels on their Ram Trucks.

One word ... POWER. Or as Tim the Tool Man Taylor would say, "More Power!"

Or having the latest, greatest, biggest touted sales gimmick FIRST on your street.

SWEET!

But I'm actually a "Ford" kind of a guy myself, so it does not matter to me.

But I DO kinda' like the new Magnums (not enough to buy one though...)

But I can't WAIT until the new "old" Mustangs come out in '05/'06!!!

Think lawn mowers.

When my BIL was ready to buy his new mower earlier this summer, he was hoping it had a hemi. :p

I called him a "dork" and gave him a flick on the noggin with my finger. :jester:

Back in the "Muscle Car" era...the hemi was a symbol of status...and of power....

a 426 Hemi emblom guaranteed acrowd arond the vehicle...

and who from that era can ever forget that sweet throaty rumble of MOPAR power?

now...as I remember...the hemi engine actually appeared in the very early 50's...in cars that looked like the ones my Grandpa used to drive....but as the 50's marched on

...the engines got bigger and better...

if I remember too...Hemi's were put into the legendary Chrysler 300 Series...those "A", "B", "C" & "D" 300's are awesome...

anyway.. when the Muscle Cars REALLY started appearing in 1964....the Hemi was all ready to be almost re-debuted...

My DD and her DH had a Dodge 2500 truck with the Hemi...it was a good truck....gas went through it faster than corn through a goose though...

but, it had a sweet throaty rumble...

:) :)

give me my big block chevy anyday,,, i dislike dodges anyway and the imitation wanna be hemi engines t hey are running are in my book just anoither gimmick to con ppl into buying a second rate truck, have worked out of all three us brands and can honestly say chevy has been the all around best work truck i have ever had,

You know dh drives to Chrysler in Kokomo everyday from Indy. I swear that truck guzzles more gas than a drunk does liquor.

We have to fill it up every 2 days which average about 40 to 58 bucks per fill up:faint:

...it's lost on me:confused: When I win the lottery and people ask me what car I want to buy is, my answer: A limo with a driver:D For me "hemi" is a prefix. "Sphere" is the suffix.:D

I hear you Froggy! My husband has a 1994 Chevy with 350,000 miles on it and running strong!

I agree...Total sales gimmick.

Here's one example of where the true 426 Hemi originated from:

I'm a die hard GM 'muscle car' nut (Olds 442, Pontiac GTO, etc.), but those old Dodges definitely made quite a name for themselves.

As far as those new Magnums go, if you should come across one at a dealership, push on the front end and see what happens!
Looks are deceiving...The entire front end is a facade, even the grill - All Plastic (or flimsy fiberglass), and pushes right in:rolleyes:
