Shirley,

are there any beaches close to the port in KW that you can go snorkeling at? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I emailed you my mailing address. We are all so lucky to have you as a member of this board!

Man oh man - my brain cells quit holding hands - first my post ends up 3 times on the board - I delete two thinking the 3rd would stay -wrong --so here goes again --I spoke with my son Michael and he told me the best and most safest was to pay $21.00 and go on the boat to snorkel OR go to the end of White Street that there is neat snorkeling there (I myself dont' think so but I don't snorkel) Michael was saying that there is a stand on the conrner of Front and Duval that you can purchase a ticket from to go snorkeling - anyhow Barb"s Tony was going snorkeling in Key West so I am sure when she gets back this Saturday she will let everyone knows what she found out to be the best - I know the beaches in KW aren't the best - I do know the beach at Casa Marina is the nicest one where you can sit on the patio, have a drink eat and be merry - the Casa Marina at one time was the big spot for all the Movie Stars, important VIP'S etc always stayed - the locals were all too poor to even go through the front door so we would watch from the sidewalks to see anyone that we might recognized from the movies - of course they all dead now --so that was before any of you all's time :)
Anyhow take care - be safe and have a great time building up the memories.
Always
Shirley

Ah, yes, the Casa Marina. Henry Flagler built that hotel while the overseas railroad (later replaced by the overseas highway) was still under construction. We had Christmas dinner at the Casa Marina one year. It was <i>nice</i>!

Hi Dave -
So you have eaten at the Casa Marina huh? You are right about Mr. Flagler - the Overseas railroad was completed in 1912 then one month before I was born exalty, the hurricane of 1935 took it out - I understood from my mama and family it was a time in their lives they would never forget - so many lost their lives - most of my family were blessed tho we did lose members and friends - when the overseas highway was started, my dad helped build the 7 mile bridge at the pay rate of 50 cents a day - big bucks huh? I have always wanted to go to the Casa Marina and just walk around to feel what I had heard about it - read about it - Norm and I have gone to the patio for a drink and snacks and loved the surrounding of it all - hammocks between the coconuts trees etc - breeze off the ocean, but I just never really walked around - guess teachings as a child always was on the back of my mind. I lent Barb & Tony's some special books about KW so they could read about and have some first hand experience on KW.
Oh well time to get back to bed ------hugssss to you and yours.
Always

I will also be keeping an eye out for Barb to post info as well.

Thank you.

Shirley, I can understand your not feeling comfortable walking around the Casa Marina. Back in the day when cruise ships had locked gates to keep the "classes" seperate, I can imagine that the Casa Marina kept up an air of "sorry, we're for wealthy visitors, not for townies". And it would be hard to forget that kind of non-welcome even though it's now just a Wyndham (it was a Marriott when we had Christmas dinner there).

And nice as it was... it doesn't <i>"feel"</i> like Key West.

Dave how very right you are and also Mr. Hemingway, who disliked children enough that he kept a bag of small stones by his front door and we happened to pass on the sidewalk by his house (at one time there was only a wrough iron small fence) - out came the stones - needless to say I was very frighten of him.
Times changes as progress continues.
Thanks for sharing
Always
