Do the Transitions lenses change to sunglasses in the dark rides from the black lights they use to light it? I am thinking of things like Peter Pans Flight and the Pooh ride.

I was thinking about getting a pair but would like to know before I fork over that much cash.

I know they don't usually darken inside but I did not know if the funny lighting they use causes them to change. The store had a special light that makes them change, so I wondered. I know they don't change in a car, I have prescription polarized sunglasses to wear in the car, but I don't want to carry an extra pair of glasses into the park.

DS and I have both worn them in the parks and never noticed a problem.

Thanks! The extra-active ones don't go all the way clear indoors, so I don't want those. It is cool they change in the car though.

I've had transitions for a few years & I won't get them again. The "sunglasses" that they turn into are waaaaayyyy too weak. I always have to put a humongous pair of sunglasses over my glasses or just carry on with major squinting. Just a thought. :)

No, they are activated by UV rays. Artificial light does not give off UV rays. This is also why they do not work in cars, your windshield blocks the UV rays. I have frames with magnetic sunglass lenses for the car and Transition lenses for everywhere else. I love them. I will never go back to carrying around two pairs of glasses again.

I wore transitions for about 5 years. My last pair of glasses doesn't have it.

I don't miss it. As was mentioned, the maximum darkness that they got in bright sunlight wasn't enough. Yes, it was convenient that I didn't need to carry sunglasses, but not that convenient.

I see you live in MN. Heads up- when it is very cold outside and bright, your glasses will get dark. But when you go inside, it takes a very long time for the darkness to leave. Many times I found myself taking my glasses off and protecting them from the sun so that when I went inside a store I could see thru normal glasses!

I don't miss them.

The light used in the rides are not strong enough to cause them to darken. The problem is...they are dark from the sun and take a short while to lighten again. So in that time you will be slightly blind when you go from the sun to dark areas. Also be aware there are a couple different brands of the lenses that darken. "transitions" is a name brand but i get my glasses from 39 dollar glasses that have their only version. That come in a whole ton of colors (red yellow green "ray ban"...) not just gray. I have been using these type of lenses for decades and love them. Also, if you like to drive with sun glasses you will need a traditional pair of sun glasses. The "transitions" will not get dark in the car.

Edit - this is really weird just as I posted to you, a commercial came on for Transitions new lenses and they DO have lenses that will darken in the car http://en-us.transitions.com/Products/Transitions-XTRActive/

Good to know they've figured out how ridiculous it was to make glasses that would turn to sunglasses *except for* the time when most of us need sunglasses!

I have never had them, but really cannot stand looking at them. Seems they are always greyish.

i have transitions lenses, but they don't darken indoors. the problem with them is, that when they do darken (outdoors), they're nowhere near dark enough. i still need sunglasses.

I have them and will not get them again. Most of the time they are fine but anytime you go in somewhere rather dark from somewhere bright (like oh a sunny Florida day) you will wonder why you can't see anything. The lenses just don't transition back to clear fast enough.

I had transitions once, but never intend to get them again. Hated the way they never seemed to be completely clear indoors, plus they never were completely *all* I needed in sunshades either.

I prefer to either have prescription shades, or have very nice (non scratching) clip ons. I have also seen *over your glasses* shades, but they seem bulky so haven't tried them yet.

I think it might be a gender thing too. I see mostly men wearing them. I think it is because we generally don't have anywhere to put separate sunglasses when we are out and about.
