Question for nursing moms/baby with reflux

I just want to offer some :grouphug:

My DD will be 6 months on Thursday and she is just able to stop taking her reflux meds in the past 2 weeks or so.

She had bad reflux and would cry for a long time every day as a result of it. I tried cutting out gassy foods. But honestly the only thing that really seemed to work was keeping her sitting up as much as possible during the day and her medication. IT DOES get better.

You can try to put a pillow under on end of her mattress to keep it elevated. My ped recommended maybe trying to cut out milk and milk products for a while to see if that made a difference - but it didn't for my DD.

The theory with dairy is the proteins are small enough to absorb directly into the blood stream and then directly into breast milk without being further broken down. Most other food are broken down in the gut. Another offender is chocolate, but that may go back to dairy as well.

Our little guy could only sleep when upright. So, other than giving up sleeping ourselves, he slept in his swing. Batteries galore were sacrificed to ensure some sleep for us. We made sure that during the day he was on his belly, or in a front pack, or (later) in his walker so he didn't get a misshapen head from being in the swing so often.

I know that there is a swing out now that can be plugged into the wall.

Glad to hear your little one is doing better!

I just wanted to add that you might want to watch your caffeine intake as well. DD has been EBF for 8 months now, and I notice that if I have any caffeine at all, it definitely aggravates her reflux.

Good Luck to You!

Hi! I saw your post how things are doing better. The same thing happened with me and dairy at about the same age, too. I cut dairy out (which I didn't think would be hard, but its hidden in a lot of stuff!) until she was about 6 months and then gradually reintroduced it. I remember the first time I ate pizza again...I was psyched! I also learned to nurse her kind of in a sitting up position, and we got a crib wedge for her bed. If you don't have one if these I STRONGLY recommend them. They are a wedge that goes under the crib mattress so the baby's head is slightly elevated...so food stays in the tummy. We got ours at Target. They are firm, like the mattress, so no SIDS issues. She also spent a long time sleeping in her cradle swing (with it turned off) because it was elevated.

Thanks and things are still going fairly well. She has slept the past few nights without waking up in pain and the same holds true for the daytime. Only occasionally will she cry out. We do have the wedge also, yet she still sleeps the best in the boppy pillow. I am really watching what I eat and making sure she has the medicine on schedule. Also using mylicon drops at each feeding. Thanks everyone for all the advice. Lots of you mention the dairy issue, so I will cut back on that too, although I really dont consume that much. I do drink an occasional caffenated drink so I will try to stick with caffine free. Thanks for all the well wishes. I know this too shall pass.

I really dont take in that much dairy. I dont drink milk at all. Sometimes have some over my cereal, but dont drink whats left. I guess the main dairy I have is if I had some cheese on pizza or something like that. I will try and stay away from dairy too this weekend I guess. Thanks

Even some butter in a homemade cookie is enough to affect my friend's DD. Her DD has reflux and is on Previcid I believe (as was her older DS who would projectile vomit across the room at every meal, even once we was on solids). She avoids all dairy-milk, cream, cheese, butter, even they are used as an ingredient in a dish. She says she can tell the next day when she has had a little dairy (a cookie or two) by the way her DD (3 months) behaves. Good luck to all of you dealing with this reflux issue.
