If I posted a question on this board.... "Should rabbis eat ham?" Would that be taken down as offensive?

I enjoy the varied topics on this board but I am getting a little tired of posts which could be seen as Catholic bashing... "should priests be married?"

Terms such as church "brainwashing" Recovering Catholic" if these were used about other religions or ethnic groups would they remain on the site?

I am just curious ..am I being too sensitive?

Funny. It is just a discussion. Take a breath and relax. Should John Lennon burn in hell for saying "Imagine there is no heaven"?

I think you are being too sensitive. I don't think the question whether priests should be allowed to be married or not is the least bit offensive, nor do I find the term "recovering" Catholic offensive. I think its ridiculous to assume all practicing Catholics are "brainwashed", but hey, that person is entitled to her opinion.

JMO! As a "cafeteria" Catholic, I enjoy seeing the debate on some of these issues. Most Catholics I know are not 100% behind the Church on every issue, I see no offense to discussing those issues where we conflict with the Church. I also see no problem with lapsed or former Catholics joining the discussion....

Whether or not Catholic priests should be allowed to marry has been an ongoing issue in the church for many years, at least according to a lot of the people I know who are Catholic who I've talked to about this issue.

I don't see how asking the question is offensive. I also don't see how asking if Rabbis should be allowed to eat what they want to is offensive. It's just a question for civil debate and as long as the responses stay civil, I don't see how you could be offended by it, unless you wanted to be.

It's been all over the news recently that when choosing a new Pope, the conclave is going to be asking itself questions about Catholic dogma, like the issue of priests being able to marry.

So how is talking about it here Catholic bashing? :confused3

Just do what we do at work lunch room

No talk about religion or politics...sex is ok...I mean talking about it

Honestly? I think your being too sensitive, if the threads upset you that much maybe try not to open them.

I don't see it as bashing either but I don't feel qualified to answer these questions. I don't understand enough about the Catholic faith to really understand the reasons for their rules and such.

No offense EsmeraldaX but you need to read a little bit more about Judism if you think a Rabbi choses if He eats ham or not.........
;)

Wow - we have a lot more moderators here on the DIS than I thought ;).

I do understand where you are coming from.

There have been quite a few recently with some really nasty, hate-filled comments. I doubt we'd see such negative threads on other religions but that's just my opinion, not fact.

Glad you clarified that...or many folks would be trying for your job! :rotfl:

I just went to my JCC's Jewish food festival, and I did ask about the ham issue, LOL! A very nice doctor who volunteers there explained the reasons behind the ham and kosher thing. I guess as long as it can be discussed in an open, and respectful manner it should be okay, right? :goodvibes

I think some of the responses have been a bit harsh. I think the OP is questioning if the moderators allow all religions to be bashed or just the Catholic religion. There is some major bashing going on and the thread is still open...but I guess it is only offensive to a few people...so maybe that's why it is still open. :confused3 I would like to see what the modeatros think though

I am Catholic, but I don't u nderstand how the question "Should priests be allowed to marry" is "bashing" anyone.

Point taken Palm tree and i usually don't.........
But you don't have to open the priest thread to see it and some of the others got their "jist" across in the title also...........

Regardless of what the readings and teachings say, if a bunch of Jewish people got together and wanted to discuss perhaps making a change in closely Rabbis had to follow the literal teachings as to what they could eat, and they concluded that they would allow for Rabbis to eat ham for whatever reason and had a civil discussion about it, how would that be offensive?

It's really only offensive if you want it to be. Just like priests are not supposed to be married according to Catholic teachings. Some people say "yes, times have changed" ; Others say "no, we have to keep with tradition".

I don't see anyone in that thread really getting nasty or out of hand. People are having a civil discussion/debate.

I fail to see how that is offensive and pointing out to me something I already know (that I do not know anything about Judiasm) is not really explaining to me how that is offensive to you...
