Question for Marylanders -- Crabcakes

Another Marylander, another don't bother. If you've had the real thing, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment.

A Virginian here...Rappahannock River/Chesapeake Bay born & bred. You MD'ers can safely order crab cakes in my home area...but I have a personal rule not to order any crabcakes or soft crabs at a restaurant outside of eastern Va & Md. Now I live on the gulf coast of AL, known for seafood, and awful crabcakes. Do you know what is popular here?? Fried crab claws! They leave the one pincher one, batter it and fry it. That's commonly the only part of the crab you'll see on the menu here. They don't eat crabs like we do. That leaves more back fin for the rest of us! ;-) My husband ordered soft crabs the other night here, and he couldn't even finish them...awful!

So no OP, don't do it! If they have grouper or red snapper instead, order away! Floridians know what to do with those ;-).

If you guys (and gals) ever wander southward, try the Edgewater Restaurant in Edgewater - obviously. I think they are better than G&M, and lucky for me a heck of a lot closer to my house.
I live near Edgewater. I'll have to try the Edgewater Restaurant sometime.

Another good place for crabcakes is Hellas in Millersville.

And that's one I never heard of. Good thread even though it has now diverged from the OP's question!

It's just setting yourself up with too much disappointment to order a crabcake outside of Maryland. Quite often, there is just too much filler and not enough crab. I'll stick with G&M or By the Docks. Even my local Box Hill Pizzeria makes a mean crabcake.

Box Hill -- Abingdon? I used to live in Harford county.

Look what I just came across http://www.crabcakereview.com/

and they rated Hellas pretty low...I liked Hellas crabcakes (more than I liked Sly Horse Tavern's).

Sorry OP to get away from your original question and I never did answer it...but, no, don't bother with crabcakes at WDW.

Isn't this thread kinda like asking: "I'm from Orlando, are there any good theme parks in _________?":confused3

Maybe to you, but if there was a hidden gem of a crabcake in WDW that I've overlooked, I wanted to know about it.

Thanks for your replies. We are crabcake snobs too. Born and raised in Bawlmer and spent summers down 'e oshun, hon. I make a great crabcake but sadly, it is hard to find good crabmeat any more. We don't order crabcakes anywhere but in Maryland. I'm trying to plan ADRs taking my shellfish-loving hubby into consideration and there really are not many choices. Many of the menus have crabcakes on them, but I kept getting a picture in my head of lots of filler and weird seasonings and sauces.

DizneyLizzie -- I don't know about the other two places you mentioned, but we do enjoy the crabcakes at Friendly Farms. Crabcake Factory in OC has great crabcakes. We learned not to eat there, but just buy crabcakes to go. I"m not sure what holds their crabcakes together, they seem to be nothing but jumbo lump backfin and seasoning.

I order mine from Crabcake Factory also. They come shipped in dry ice. Very good.

As to the original question--absolutely not. We once went to Fultons and I stupidly let the server tell me that their crabcake was as good or better than I could get in Md.

Well--wasn't even close!!!

Sad to say that even N. of the Mason/Dixon Line they have forgotten how a good crabcake should taste.

We always travel down to Balto. County for ours--at Michaels, on York Rd. just across from the fairgrounds.

Heard that Coins in O.C. has a pretty good crabcake--we'll be trying that when we're down there next week...

I agree..I've had crabcakes at Coral Reef and Grand Floridian Cafe, both to which many ingrediants (i.e. peppers, scallions, lots of filler and fruit salsa) appeared in them. Now they weren't "bad" but definitely not MD perfection. I'd order something else :thumbsup2

Exactly! I live in Baltimore County, but my sister is in Abingdon. We get crabcakes from Box Hill all the time and they are excellent.

If I ever get back down to that area to visit nieces and nephews, I will have to make a point of stopping in there and bringing home a few. :cool1:
