I have read so many different things-what really does happen with your passport? Do you give it up at the beginning of the cruise and pick it up at the end? Do you show it at embarkation and put it in your safe until you leave? Do you need it when returning from Nassau back to the ship?
My head is spinning.

When you check in they take your passport and give you back a receipt. In order to get back onto the ship at any port you have to have your KTTW card and photo id ie. a driver's licence. They actually swipe your KTTW card when you exit the ship and then when you return. On the last morning of the cruise you get up early and go through customs and immigration at which time you get your passport back after you show the receipt. It's never been a problem for us.

Hope this helps and have a great, great time!

very clear..thanks so much. I was really starting to get confused.

mom_rules, sorry to hijack your thread.
My mom is going to the August cruise, she has a passport, but she doesn't drive, she has the old health card which does not have a picture on it, dose that mean she'll have to stay in the ship? Do you think her citizenship card willl do the trick?l

Your mom will need photo ID. You can get a card (just like a DL) at the Registration office that is only for photo ID.

Unless someone knows otherwise, I don't think you can get away without photo ID getting on and off the ship.

Maybe someone else knows more?

We just returned from the Feb 10 Wonder cruise. If you do not have another photo ID, ask the CM at the port (when you check in) for a photocopy of your passport. They will give it to you on the spot and you will use the photocopy along with your KTTW card to leave and re-board the ship when in port.

Thank you very much for your replies. Making a copy of mom's passport is so much easier than going to the registration office. She is 82, I work downtown and she does not know her way around using public transit (yes, she is spoiled, we always drive her around on weekends). I also got a message from my TA just now, she said she checked with DCL, she was told that they do not take passports from Canadians. But I will take copy, just in case.

Thanks again for your replies!

We are leaving next week and have been told numerous times that they will take our passports and we will get them back on the morning (6 am - ugh!) on the last day.

One question I have is in regards to children. They do not have photo ID except for their passports. Do they need it to leave the ship?

We cruised Oct 2003 and then again October 2004 -- both times they took our passport.

Children don't need photo ID - all they need is the KTTW card.

Also children do need to show up early the last morning as you clear customs and immigration as well as get your passports back.

Yes, they will take your passports when you check in . You will be issued a receipt which you will present on the last morning to retrieve your passport. You will then present yourselves (all non U.S, citizens) to the U.S. Customs and Immigration officials who have boarded the ship. Last week this was done in Wavebands on the Wonder at 6 am.

OK I am a person who plans for the what if's. So if something happens I know what I can do. So I doubt this would happen but just incase i lost the receipt how would i get my passport back. I am sure this has happened. Am I stuck on the ship for Life :) that would not be too bad :) New permanent residence DCL cruise lines cool. Seriously I would be so paranoid about loosing my receipt that i would allways be checking the safe to see if it was still there and carrying it to customs like it was a priceless jewel. thanks for your help.

Take a photo copy of the photo pages of your passport and present it with your drivers license (photo ID). I'm sure you shouldn't have a problem.
