Question for Catholics

:confused3 The comment was about a minister NOT a Priest. So why the Priest comment?
So I mistyped, but Priest, Minister...to me their all the same.

Not the same at all. When a person says Priest it is a Catholic reference. So by saying what you did you were condeming the Catholic Church for a Protestant (Minister) Church surmon.

Ok, so they are different in that one is a Catholic, and one is a Protestant...other than that to me they are the same. And if this is going to be drawn out into a big discussion, I will apologize now, I miss spoke.

Wait, now are you "bashing" this person for misspeaking and saying "priest" instead of "minister"? And further, you're now accusing him, flat out, of "condemning" the Catholich Church? Are you SO sure he was meaning it to be condemning, and not just a mistake? If you are, would you please give me directions on how to read other people's minds, b/c I would LOVE to know how to do that!!

This proves my point from before. The Catholics will come and say that if people disagree with them, they are "bashing" them, but then will turn around and "bash" someone else for a misstatement when they don't even know for a fact that the person meant to "disparage" them, and based on his reply, he didn't. Don't you find that a little one-sided, like having your cake and eating it too?

As a Catholic I would appreciate not being lumped into an all inclusive group. While I agree that your posts didn't quite fit here since the OP had specific *Catholic* questions, I didn't mind your tone quite so much until this one particular post.

Some people get a bit touchy in general (me included) when it comes to Catholicism. I am not sure why, but it seems that a lot of Catholic question threads turn into debates on what is right and wrong with the Church. Little things like not capitalizing the letter "C" in Catholic bugs me since w/o it, catholic is a generic word meaning "universal". Yes, a priest and a minister isn't always the same thing, but I admit I screw up and call mass for other non-Catholic services. Happens now and then ;)

My point... whatever reason, Catholic threads always seem to get heated here. People like (sorry to point out a name) JoeEpcotRocks came in and insulted the Church w/o regard to anything else that this thread had to do with. That is insulting. May not be bashing, but causes hurt feelings all around.

You won't find me on a Baptist thread saying "the closed mindedness of that group is too much for me to handle... that's why I am Catholic" First of all, I don't believe that... second of all, to me that would be an insult, right?

I wish there could be a Catholic thread here on the DIS that I personally read where others don't get so huffy and don't get so negative in general.

Makes it hard to ever want to admit one is Catholic here in the first place. Sadly the same is true in general in life for me. The moment I tell a non-Catholic I am Catholic, I fear the response. I've never been put down for one specific part of me as much as I have the Catholic classification in my whole life.

Not saying one person here is right, and one is wrong... just saying thoughts on my mind. I wish there was a bit more tolerance on this thread in general.

Just food for thought on this thread... and very sorry for being off topic with it too.

I'm sorry if I caused this thread to go off topic. That wasn't my intention. I merely miss typed.

Not always.

Episcopal and Lutheran ministers are usually called "priests" as well.

Also, the Catholic church teaches that we can never judge who is in heaven or hell, because we are mere mortals and don't understand everything about an individual's life. The judgement is left up to God-- not us, priests, or even the Pope.

I have a quick question regarding this statement. If it is true, how come the Catholic church (well from the mouths of the Catholics that I know and protesters on tv), states that any gay/lesbian will go to hell as well?? This is just a question. Please don't flame me for asking. I'm not Catholic either so I just wanted to know what others thought.

I don't intend to be rude Jennifer, but if what you know about the Catholic church is simply from those that you know and prostesters on TV, then you have not gotten accurate information about the Church's teachings.

The Catholic Church does NOT state that gays/lesbians will go to hell. It teaches that the ACT of homosexuality is a sin. But sin does not equal hell - because if it did, we would all be condemned to hell. ::yes::

Point taken. I didn't mean to lump "all" Catholics into this saying, just some of them that were on this board. I guess what I meant to say is that for the Catholics ON THIS BOARD who have "bashed" others for what they said, while complaining about others "bashing" them and/or the Catholic religion, they might ought to be able to take what they dish out. That's all.

As I've said before, labels people put on me don't bother me. I do try to keep my tone respectful, but there will inevitably be someone who doesn't find it so, and that is there right to find it so. Nevertheless, it doesn't really bother me.

Absolutely agreed. See, I do agree with the Catholic church on some things :)

Might it be more correct to say that sin does equal hell, but the saving grace of Jesus Christ can keep us out of hell if we choose to accept it?

I understand your point as well on this. Sometimes people cannot take what they dish out as well. Not directed at anything specific, but in general I understand and have seen it here! I just felt like venting when I saw how things were turning ;)

Deb, I totally forgot that as well, excellent point on the term priest and who uses it!

As for homosexuality, yes it is a sin, but no one said anyone was going to hell because of it. You are generically correct numbersman. Jesus saved sinners from going to hell. The Catholic Church (among a few others) does require that there is more to life and going to heaven than just believing in Jesus. Technically at least. We are in the Savior and works requirement for heaven group. More or less if you accept Jesus, you will want to do good work. If you continually sin and go against God's wishes it is believed you were not sincere in the first place on your acceptance of Jesus. Does that kind of make sense?
A bit of a tangent from what you asked, but you are pretty accurate to say that Jesus keeps us from hell if we choose to accept Him as Savior.

That is why I asked. I didn't understand. Thanks for clarifing.

I can't speak for the Catholic churches offical position on gay/lesbian relationships - doesn't affect me. However, I will say that my Catholic church bulletin frequently has announcements about meetings for gay/lesbian Catholics. Just this past week there was an announcement about a group for the parents of gay/lesbians. It's purpose was to help the parents accept their gay/lesbian children.
So while the Catholics you know may be vocally anti-gay/lesbian, it is not current Catholic doctrine. As for the media, well it's the media and sensationalism sells. Harmony doesn't get ratings.

I agree with you, Helenabear, about going to Heaven. As a Southern Baptist, I can tell you that that is what my denomination believes. I can't work my way into Heaven but accepting Christ's death and resurrection encourages me to do good deeds. I will never be good enough myself.
