I went to the dentist today to have 2 teeth extracted. They had wanted me to have root canal and caps, but the fear of going through all that (everyone seems to have a horror story about root canals!! ) lead me to having the teeth pulled instead. The dentist was not too pleased with my decision (tough cookies!). Anyway, I always thought that when they put that super strength Ambesol on your gums and cheeks before that HUGE needle comes out, they would wait a few minutes for the area to become numb. IMMEDIATLEY after he dabbed the ambesol on, the used the needle!!! Man did it hurt!!!! Isn't it the common pratice to wait before inflicting the pain?

my dentist always waits like a minute.

hope you're not in too much pain.

I was at the dentist last week. He waited for a certain amount of time (he was watching the clock) before he inserted the needle. So sorry he hurt you. I would be sure and tell him.

I had a filling replaced last month and they made me sit for a good bit of time before they gave me the needles. The dentist kept asking me if it was numb yet. Sounds like maybe your dentist wasn't happy with your decision...sure hope that wasn't the case though.

Ouch!!! Did you tell him? Next time bite his finger... BTW I have had 3 root canals... and have 2 caps... ( last dentist didn't put a cap on the third one and now I have a lovely cracked tooth that I need to get fixed) Anyways that is the only problem I have had with it... I've had enough teeth pulled out ( 4 for braces and 1 wisdom tooth... the toher 3 come out next week) to not want anymore

I had 3 wisdom teeth pulled and 2 teeth filled about 3 1/2 weeks ago. The dentist dabbed that numbing stuff on my gums, then turned around a plunged me with the needles. Didn't wait long. I thought it was strange, too. I had to have 4 shots. The 2nd one put me in a minor anxiety attack. He hit the nerve pretty hard.:( Scared me witless. Luckily he had left the room right before the attack hit me. I was semi-calm when he got back (I was afraid he'd make me wait to have those suckers pulled!).

At least they tried to give you something.

I go to the orthodontist every 2 months and they don't give me ANYTHING! ;)

My dentist always waits. He also never hurts me. He's done more than one root canal and I never felt a thing. It makes me wonder what everyone is complaining about. Maybe you need a new dentist.

I've also had 4-5 root canals and don't know what all the fuss is about (see, I can't even remember how many I've had). I've NEVER had any pain. By having the tooth pulled, you will start losing bone mass in your jaw. This is one of the reasons people with dentures have problems with them not fitting - their jaw bone is always changing.

My dentist does wait a minute or two before 'the needle'.

My dentist always waits...he has never hurt me. Although like Shannon said the numbing meds do always put me into minor anxiety attacks. My dentist says thats normal though. I would definatly tell him that he hurt you!

I'm w/Mary Ellen in that I think root canals are a piece of cake. The only pain is with the shots (and in the pocketbook).

That said, my dentist doesn't wait between the ambesol and the shots, but he does this weird shimmy thing with my cheek that minimizes the pain.

Nope when I got my Wisdom Teeth pulled a long time ago, he waited about a minute (which isn't much really) before injecting me with the stiff and yes it hurt too.

Colleen A., it sounds like you should shop around for a new dentist. My dentist always waits between "swabbing" and the injections. She does the injections very slooowly. It really helps minimize the discomfort. I always bring a cassette to put in the headphones they offer me, too. Turning the volume up is a helpful distraction! ;) One last bit of advice from my young niece, who's had leukemia and has endured countless chemo injections: Take a deep breath, relax, and then breathe out slowly while getting the shot. (Sort of like LaMaze class all over again, except that my niece got to use a party blower! lol :D )

Surprisingly, I'm not in a lot of pain at the moment. It did take 3 hours for the bleeding to stop though! I did "threaten" the dentist - "if you hurt me, I'll bite you!" He didn't take my joke too well!! He didn't do anything (or at least it seemed!) to try and ease the pain of the needle. Well, he did tell me that I'd "regret my decision"!! Didn't think he meant then and there!!

Hi Colleen! I'm so sorry your dentist hurt you. Just a little bit of info about extracting salvageable teeth.....when you extract teeth, there is a possibility of the jawbone underneath receding and loosening the surrounding teeth, which is why dentists don't like extracting teeth unless there is no other choice. :)

Doesn't any body go to a dentist that uses gas? Once that buzz hits you really don't care what they do.

First, let me just say ... OUCH!!

I've had four root canals, and they are less painful than I fantasize. I am afraid of the dentist, and even the thought of a filling gives me a panic attack. But my root canals were not that bad.

Another reason why dentists don't like to pull teeth is because it messes up your bite. Also, your other teeth tend to shift to fill in the spaces.

I'm such a wimp my dentist gives me valium and the gas. I have fallen asleep in the chair during a root canal. Once the drilling is over I really relax ;)

Having been the victim of an extraction myself about a month ago, I can tell you that my oral surgeon DID NOT wait either.

I'm telling you, I was more sore from the injection than anything else!

I've had a problem with that in the past, the dental techs said it was from the epinephrine that is in the novacaine. My heart would get all racey, I'd feel like I was breathing too fast, etc.

I now always ask for the "epi free" stuff, and no longer have any problems!
