Question for all you campers out there....

Cheerchick -- Unbelievable! When I was 15 I did a cross-country driving trip with Girl Scouts to Ten Sleep, Wyoming to National Center West (ours was 3.5 weeks so I guess we live farther away), and that's why I want to do this with my kids!

We didn't have the passports; I guess no one involved with my trip knew they existed.

My parents took us across the country and into Canada 4 times when I was young (many moons ago). We never camped though, my mother was afraid of bears lol! I do remember we stayed in cabins sometimes, hotels/motels most of the time. They never ever had a reservation though.

It was some of our fondest memories, our family of 6 crammed in the car. My father always took the "scenic route" and avoided the tourist traps. Apparently the Grand Canyon was a tourist trap. We learned a great deal about bladder control and in some intances, bowel control. This was very helpful to us when he decided that the dirt road with no side rails on it, the one that had about 4 inches on the side between the car and a long, long drop down a cliff was the perfect place to let my sister who had recently gotten her drivers learner permit to practice driving.

Seriously we did have lots of fun, we ate a lot of meals beside streams and had a good time running around. What I never knew was just how budgeted those trips were. #0 some odd years later (longer for my siblings) we still get together and remember the great times spent together!

great idea on the info with the states. Since we might not be camping, but I do need info on different states, would it be ok for me to start (or you to start one on NC) a thread on the Dis for families board??

I am sending away for state tourism info but would love some first hand experience from families who have traveled. Like, what attractions to SKIP, and what not to miss. You know how state brochures make everything sound great, but in reality.............. well, you know. :)

I think our first stop will be in Indiana. Probably Indianapolis. Other than the speedway (Dh and I have been and don't think our kids, especially the girls, would enjoy that) what would be a good thing to do or see?? Stuff like that. Every once in a while I could ask about another state and gather info from there. What do ya think? :)

Indianapolis has a WONDERFUL Children's Museum. My kids all still enjoy it, even though they're a bit older now (youngest is 10 and they go up to 19)

Five levels of things to see and do. We drive there for a day trip from the Cincinnati area.

:sunny:

Hmmm, seems to me most hotels/motels will offer a rollaway for a bit more each night. We have 5 in our family but right now the youngest is in a toddler bed and we literally just throw his mattress in the back of the van when we go on a trip and then he sleeps on that on the floor of the hotel. DH feels a little silly carrying it in and out, but it is worth it to have DS comfy. We always register as having three kids and have never even had them ask what we intend to do with that third child.

Mrs Pete--great info! WOW!

I called Super8 and they said they let the 3rd child stay in the room and they don't require a rollaway or anything.

We plan on getting one of those quick blow up mattresses (we've wanted one for a long time) and we'll use that. And most of the Super8's I've looked at have continental breakfasts.

We just need a clean room with 2 beds and a bathroom since we will only be staying one night at a time(most of the trip anyway).
