Question for all the dog lovers out there

I have never adopted a puppy. My dogs were all fully grown so I guess I actually did know what I was "gonna" get. I just put my beagle/lab to sleep. We adopted him at 8. Not the prettiest dog (think lab body with beagle legs and head) but the nicest, sweetest dog.

You are not going to know exactly what you get when you get a pure breed. My friend has a golden. They are usually very friendly dogs but not in this case, he is very mean (and well treated).

I just want to adopt a dog that needs a good home. I am fine with those who want a purebred. Every dog needs a home anyway.
bolding mine.

I didn't suggest that I knew exactly what I would get.
I know roughly how big or small it will be, how much it will shed, it's general appearance and temperment.

I am sorry for your loss.

Please, guys, let's not let this great thread break down into a debate!

There are many causes of pet overpopulation in this country, not simply the responsible breeding of purebreds.

Collies only. Having three of them, and having fostered a few, I feel I know the most about their health & habits that it is easier to just keep going with what I know then to start over with a new breed. I also love the fact that they take their exercise in spurts, rather than being constantly high or low energy, so I can get in a good jog with the younger ones in the evenings. Plus, they are smart and gorgeous, just like me. ;)
Ha!! :goodvibes

I'm an equal oportunity dog owner. My first dog wast the runt of the littler mutt, but he was a noble soul (if dog have souls), he lived for ten years (the last two having insulin shots twice a day), he died last year and even my friends "mourned" him, he was trully a loving friend.

My second dog, a beautiful purebred black poodle was given to me at three months old in March, she was a happy, friendly, energetic but nervous puppy. She died al most two months ago due to a heart condition.

My third dog was given to me as a surprise. A rescued three month old mutt, we don't know who or how her parents are. The vet told us she might have some dalmatian or pointer in her. We have no idea how she will turn out, but so far she eats A LOT, is in fashion (shoes are her favorite thing in the world) and has a bit of a temper.

We now have a Standard Poodle named Darci due to my allergies to the Akita. Our 2 1/2 year old poodle bounces everywhere just like Tigger. I swear the dog has springs in her legs. She is very, very sweet and affectionate. She is also dumb as a rock but I hear that most poodles are wicked smart. The biggest minus with Darci is that we need to take her to the groomer every 10 weeks, so it's an added expense.

We have a 15 yo toy poodle (our third), and she IS wicked smart. Eerily smart. She's trained several other generations of (big) dogs to use our dog door.

She's also a real "coat holder". She knows how to start squabbles between our other larger dogs and walks away with a "who, me?" look on her face - while she carries off whatever treat they were squabbling over. She runs the house. We call her our 10 Pound Giant. She's a pure bred and still healthy as a little horse.

I don't know how I was starting a debate. I said at least two times, I don't care what I have, others do. I , personally, expressed what I do-why does everytime someone has an opinion, it is a debate? I have both, a purebreed and a mutt. I love them both the same. They needed homes, I gave them one.

When I was young we had poodles, then chows, then ****zus. Now, we rescue ours from the pound, so we aren't picky. Right now we have a maltese and a tibetian terrier.

We had a poodle and it was the smartest dog we have ever had, he died at age 10 from a dog attack.

We had a beagle, she was a growler and very aggressive, we watched her around people , but we loved her and she died at age 9 from a twisted bowel.

We now have a Cockapoo, he is very playful, everything is about play, he is the biggest hoot to watch and we love him dearly he is now 1 1/2 years old, we never even knew what a cocker mix was until we got him, we were just after something to love but I'm glad we gave him a go, because he is so very loving!
