I have a friend who has trouble with motion sickness. She is wondering if an inside cabin, with no window, would be better for her than an outside cabin, either with a window or verandah. We've had both types of cabins but since none of us has a problem with motion sickness I didn't know what to tell her. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

I think the best advice would be to choose a cabin lower in the ship (like deck 2 or 3) and towards the middle of the ship. We prefer the oceanview for the natural light it provides, and if the view of the ocean is bothersome, just don't look out the window. I personally think the inside cabins are too clastrophobic (sp?). You could also recommend Bonine. It seems to work better than darmamine. Hope this helps!!:)

Rather than medication I used the sea bands. I never had to worry about mixing the drugs and alcohol. They cost about $7 and can be reused again and again.

Maybe this will encourage your friend.

I have motion sickness worse than anyone I know. If I'm not the driver in a vehicle, I get sick. I even switched banks because driving there involved too many left turns. (I'm not kidding folks!) I couldn't rock my daughter to sleep when she was an infant. (I walked w/her instead.)

I've taken three Disney Magic cruises. I've NEVER had a problem w/motion sickness. Our first cruise was an interior stateroom (7127 I think, and it was AFT?) Before the 1st cruise, our Dr. gave us an RX for the behind-the-ear patch. I never opened it. I bought BONINE for the cruise from which we just returned, and never took one. I felt the motion of the ship only slightly, but it was hypnotic and relaxing, not nausea-inducing. In fact, I wanted to sleep most of the time like the man in the DCL commercial!

I think some might live w/fear of motion sickness (as I did) and might not ever feel it. Take the medications w/you, but you just might not need them.:D

I seem to recall that an outside cabin is better than an inside cabin to help with motion sickness.

One of the ways you get motion sick is when your body "feels" the motion of the boat, but your surroundings are staying still. You get to feeling ill or with a headache as your body tries to figure out what's going on. But if you have an outside cabin and can see the fact that you're moving around, then the mind adjusts a little bit better.

I tried the seabands and they didn't work nor did Dramamine. I was just sick for my first day - sort-of bad - then I was ok. I'm asthmatic, so I have to becareful what I take.

I hope to avoid it the next cruise!

He can't go longer than and hour and a half in a car without vomiting, it has always been that way since he was about two and he is now 11. The ship has never bothered him, nor do airplanes... on the ship we always get a veranda, the reason being that in the car fresh air often helps so we figured on the ship the same logic would follow, we fell in love with the veranda and now need one just for DH and I but I would really recommend one, if you are not feeling up to par it is a nice place to chill and not feel like you are being punished.

We picked a midsip verandah, just for this reason. My DW is very prone to motion sickness so we were worried about it. She had the seabands and the bonine and was great. First night was rough getting through the gulf stream, but after that not bad. She felt it come on, she would take a bonine and be fine. We had the verandah to get fresh air in private when needed and ended up just enjoying it. My vote is for midship verandah, but just one persons opinion.

I actually woke up on the night from St. Maarten to St. Thomas and felt the ship rocking and felt a little queasy, but have never had an issue with motionsickness, so it must have just been a bad night and something about capt. wanting to get to St. Thomas early.

She will have a great time no matter what. Good luck.

I had never gotten seasick before this past cruise. The Bonine worked very well. I will defintely have it on hand for the next repo cruise.

I've read that watching the horizon and being in the fresh air can help a lot.

I'd go for midship veranda. Fresh air and looking out at the horizon really help calm my motion sickness. I feel the most queasy in the interior dining rooms and in the theater. My DH says he always knows when we've changed course, not because he can feel it, but because I grab the table like I'm trying not to fall off my chair. I would guess I'd have the same motion issues in interior staterooms as I do in the interior public areas.

Verandah is MUCH better than an inside and DO NOT get an oceanview with window. Seeing the water swell out the window can make you sick faster than anything.

The fresh air on the verandah and the ability to watch the horizon will do the trick most of the time.

I am VERY prone to motion sickness. I have not been sick on a cruise yet though (put me on a small craft and I'm history in no time at all.) I think your friend will be fine. I took less-drowsy dramamine with me and never needed it.

my daughter and i have extremely severe motion sickness on land and small boats....
we were very worried going into our first cruise...
we had a mid-ship, verandah room on deck 8....
we were perfectly fine....

the only time we felt any motion at all was when the ship crossed the gulf stream (it happens twice....the evening you're heading out from port canaveral and the evening you're on your way back in)....but the motion didn't bother us,though it was noticeable...

On our most recent cruise we has an inside room. We felt a constant shimmy (like when your tires need balancing) especially trying to sleep. I did get sick even thought I used Dramamine Less Drowsy and Ginger capsules. I would never have an inside room again. On our four previous cruise we had a verandah (outside cabing) and never felt the shimmy.

I get motion sickness in the mountains or spinning round and round. I have never been sea sick. I have sailed 9 times and have expereinced rough seas but never been more than a little queasy. My trick is peppermint gum. It has ALWAYS worked. Anytime I feel queasy I chew a piece of peppermint gum and it makes me all better. It also worked for my Husband, Niece, and Nephew.
