I recently had a co-worker take a collection of money from other employees, to help herself pay a bad check. I found this a little odd.......how about you?

I would never take a collection up for myself. Did she tell people that contributed what the collection was for? eek:

Yep, she sure did....and got the money she needed! It was a check she bounced with the company and was going to be suspended for 1 week, so she took up a "collection" for herself, and employees gave her the money.  She told them EXACTLY what it was for too.:o

I would have laughed in her face...unless I knew that the bounced check was because her child was ill and she had to use all the money that was in the checking account to pay for the emergency surgery to save his/her life...or if she bounced the check because she was held up at gunpoint and the robber took all of her money out of her checking account and the bank hadn't processed her FDIC claim yet...or if her dog stole her ATM card and wiped out her bank account w/o her knowing and took off for Vegas (Monty Dog...don't get any ideas)!

That's pretty bold if you ask me! Were there any extrenuating circumstances that preceeded the bounced check?

Wow, I didn't think begging at work was allowed. However I guess if she's the type of person that would write a bad check to her employer I wouldn't put anything past her. Does management know? I hate to pass judgement on people but what were these coworkers who contributed thinking?

How much was the check for?

A week suspended seems like a really harsh punishment if it was truly an error on her part.

I know with my bank, sometimes if I pay for something with my visa checkcard, it double or even triple charges me and it can be up to a week before my bank settles the mess, and if I did not have overdraft protection (which I do have so it's not really an issue for me) any outstanding checks would bounce.

For instance, a few weeks ago, I used my visa checkcard to pay off my trip to WDW (approx $700 before I cancelled that trip and got my new ressie with AP rates). Anyway, they double charged my vacation fund, which is not my primary checking out, just my "fun" acct. That was an approx $1400 charge on an account that I only had enough in to cover what was needed for the trip.

They fixed it but it took a full week. If I'd had any outstanding checks they would have bounced while the bank was fixing their error. Just an example of how sometimes errors really are not a person's fault.

Personally, I would not hit up my co-workers for money. I'd never even bring it up. But if she was desperate for the $$ and it really was not her fault, I can see why people might feel for her and give her the $$.

Great! Now you've gone and put an idea in his head....

:) :teeth: :teeth:

I would never do it but if she was open about what the money was for, it is the "givers" choice whether to donate or not.

What is the difference between this and kids standing outside the grocery store asking for money so they can go on a trip with their sports team. If my kid wants to take a trip, I will figure out how to pay for it and it won't be by begging.

I still remember how embarassing it was for me to take the money from a collection that my coworkers put together on my behalf when DD was in the hospital with Appendicitis and I missed two weeks of work so they figured I needed the money. I kept refusing until my boss said, we wanted to do this for you, please take it.

I could not imagine asking for the money, and truthfully it made me uncomfortable that they insisted that I take the money. Man, how could your co-worker look in the mirror after that?

Breezy Carol- I just had to buy my first Mag Subscription!!!We just completed the first week of school! When GS cookie time comes, though, I will be on the other side of the fence!

Seems pretty harsh of a punishment if she only bounced one check to the company. She must have done it several times. I knew a woman at my previous job who did that. After the 4th bounced check and the bank kept waiving her NSF fee, she was told that the next bounced check would mean her dismissal. That I can understand as she worked at a bank, which as a bank employee we're supposed to know how to balance our checking account at the very least.

As for the original question, would I take up a collection for myself? Although I've been tempted many times, I would never do that... There are other options to get money besides begging for it, especially to my co-workers. I would be way too embarassed and I could never hold my head up high anymore at work. Not to mention the gossip and rumors that would surely circulate.

I don't want to steal this thread but I have to agree with you on this one. I deliberately avoid business if I see kids out front. I especially love when their parents are there drinking $4 Starbucks drinks while their kids are begging strangers for money.

Disclaimer before flames are thrown:If a child is in need because the parents cannot afford to pay for him to participate I'm more than happy to help but in our area this would be a rarity.

I would never do that but some people have no couth and would do this for just about any reason.

Never!! Not even for a family emergency would I start something like that on my own...especiall not for a bad check! How tacky!
