Has anyone stayed at the Castle on the Beach in Ocean City Md.?

Can you please advise your thoughts, reviews or tips on this. We got out confirmation in the mail yesterday. We are staying in the efficenicy Apartment which sleeps 6. Only DH, 6 yr old Granddaugther and myself for 1 week in July for a Dance trip. (Yes it is Starpower)

Looking for input, pictures, review and tips on the hotel, places to eat that are not too expensive, and things to do.

Remember we are on a budget. :rolleyes1

Well one of the things that would be fun to do with your Gdaughter and that is free is to drive out to Assateague Island to see the wild ponies. There is also an information center on the right side before the bridge to the island that is kind of interesting has some displays and a movie about the island and pictures of the ponies and the workers there will talk to you about the ponies. It's been several years since we stopped at the info ctr so this could have changed... they had some things on sea life stuff. All this was free. Then you can drive over the bridge to the actual island and check out the ponies. Just don't try to feed or touch them. They are truly wild!! There's lots of other wild life over there too, different types of birds (egrets...those tall long legged ones as well as the smaller kinds) and some deer as well as the smaller wild life you'd expect. Keep your eyes peeled you never know what you'll spot! and have the camera ready too!

There's a cute little Western Theme park called Frontier Town on the way to Assateague. It's just outside of Ocean City by a couple of miles at most.

It's a fairly small park but it's very inexpensive entertainment for a child her age if she would like that type of thing. They have paddle boats, pony rides which are actually rather nice on a small trail still visible to you (instead of in a round circle, at least when we were there last) and they have full sized horses for the adults too if you want to ride (again, at least the last time we were there), panning for gold (this might've cost extra but if it did it was only a dollar or two), a stage coach ride in an authenic stage coach, a very cool indian cultural show where they had their indian children participating in the show. and they invited the kids in the audience to participate. My kids really enjoyed that and learned (and talked about what they learned) some interesting cultural facts! Even my girly girl enjoyed this adventure years ago when we took her there. And other than the panning for 'fool's gold' (which they get to keep) everything else was included in the cost of the admission. I'm sure there are other things I have forgotten. The can can dancing show, the show down at Ok corral, the 'something' trial.... it was all fun and interesting. I had girls and they still had fun and asked to go back again.

There's also a water park there. That's a separate cost. I think you can buy a combined ticket though that makes it cheaper. Not the most "thrilling" water park but for a 6 y.o., she'd probably be happy. It has a lazy river, some water slides, a shallow pool, not sure what else any more. But I do know it's MUCH cheaper than the one at Jolly Roger on 31st St!!!

If you want to play mini golf, play during the day. It MUCH cheaper!!! And many of the courses out on rt 50 are much cheaper than the Ocean Hwy courses. BTW, if you need anything there is a Walmart right on Rt 50 in West Ocean City. I'm not sure exactly how far out.... between 3 and 5 miles. It's right on 50, you can't miss it. And RT 50 is the main road out of Ocean City down at the end of Ocean City down by the Inlet, down past 1st st. I think it's down by Division st (there are 5 streets or so below 1st street).

Oh if you Gdaughter really wants to do the rides at Trimpers or on the Pier (they are separately operated) Do them during the day too!! Again, much cheaper!! Ask at the ticket booth about buying a wristband for riding for the afternoon for one price. It used to be something like $14 for ride from 1 to 6 pm as much as you want, but it's been at least a couple of years since we've done this. And at night everything operates by tickets and it is ridiculous how expensive it is to ride the rides at night!! Like when I did the math, to ride the roller coaster which wasn't that long because there's no room for a 'true' coaster it was almost $3 for one person! Even the kiddie rides were about a $1.25 to $1.50 a ride.
That's all I can think of right now.... HTH! :goodvibes

Castle in the Sand used to be the place we stayed every single year until just about 3 or 4 years ago. We love that they have an outdoor place for lunch and drinks. They also have entertainment in their outdoor bar area each afternoon. It's a lot of fun and the kids have a blast dancing and all. They have an awesome pool as well. It's huge and has a diving board (which is very rare since diving boards are no longer allowed... apparently they are grandfathered in since it's always been there). They also serve drinks and food to you on the beach... again, another one of those grandfathered rules since alcohol is not allowed on the beach anywhere else. They also have entertainment for the kids each week day. There is a clown, but I forget her name. She's great with the kids, teaches them to juggle, does crafts, paints faces, etc.

We always stayed in the efficiency rooms. The only down part about them is that the bedroom is when you walk into the room, the kitchen is past it. So, when you have a napper, you can't just walk through there which was a problem when the kids were little.

It also got a bit pricey for us. We've since moved to another place which is a condo with 2 bedrooms, pools, etc up at about 101st Street. It is actually about the same or less expensive than Castle in the Sand.

From Castle, you can walk to the end of the boardwalk and hop on the tram car, instead of having to drive down to the boardwalk, which was always nice. There's also plenty of restaurants in walking distance, which is nice. Plus being so close to the convention center (which I assume is where your dance stuff is being held) is also a great thing since you can just walk across the street.

You will definitely enjoy your trip there! They have great customer service and really nice people that tend to stay there.

Is it the Starpower Star Pak thing? My DD just got an invitation to that at her dance competition over the weekend. I haven't decided if we're going or not. If we go, we'll need some hotel info/advice also.
