Hey, everybody!
My husband and I are sailing in March to celebrate our anniversary (this will be my 6th and his 2nd Disney Cruise), and I have never stopped at Key West before. We are trying to decide between booking an excursion or just walking around the island while we're there. There are a couple excursions we're interested in, but I saw some things on the site under "Things to Do" that are not offered as excursions---a lighthouse tour, tour of Ernest Hemingway's house, and eating at Margaritaville.
What I'm getting to is I'm wondering if it is just as easy to wander the island on our own since it's so small? I'm used to doing excursions through Disney, but I thought Key West would be fine to just walk on our own and do what we want.
Thanks!

There is plenty to see just walking around, and that is what we plan to do this month on our stop.
But the first time we went we did the conch train tour which was fun and we had a beautiful cool day.
2 must do's for us:
Garbo's Grill, a stationary food truck that serves Korean BBQ, its always jam packed but worth the wait. There is a cute sitting area to wait in with a bar if you want a cold beer or drink. Featured on Diner's Drive ins and Dives.
Blue Heaven restaurant for their key lime pie, its to die for. Another place that gets crowded, but you can just buy pie to go and not wait for a table.
They have a few tables out back you can grab and sit at, if you can snag one.

We have also done Truman's Little White House tour, that has been my favorite thing in all of our trips there.

Have a wonderful time and Happy Anniversary!

Thanks so much, @lorimay ! That's pretty much what I needed/wanted to hear. We both wanted to just wander on our own at our own pace and see what there is to see. Those are some great suggestions, too! I read your reply out to my husband just now, and he was all about some key lime pie! Haha! I just looked up the Truman's LWH tour, and that looks very cool!

Just walk around. You're not going to have enough time on The Rock to actually experience it anyway.

There's another Key West thread around here that has a lot of great suggestions.

KW is very small and compact and so very easy to explore on your own. The longest walk from the ship would be to the Southernmost Point and that isn't even that bad a walk.

So much so see and do without doing an excursion. So many bars to stop and have a cold beverage if you want.

we did our own thing in key west too and spend a nice chunk of time at the little sea aquarium. Its also a turtle rescue so we got to learn lots about how they save the turtles. We got to feed baby sting rays and pet then and there is also a touch tank. my kids had a great time ju8st wandering around in there. There are alot of little shopd you can visit and Truman's little white house is a short walk. We didnt book an excursion and had a great time just walking around exploring!

We purchased a groupon for an on/off tour of the city. It's the same company Disney uses but they do not offer on/off privileges. With a discount code it came to $62 for 4 people (kids 12 and under are free) I think. We have 180 days from time of purchase to use groupon. Taking it for our February cruise.
