Now that we have Hulu Plus, my kids are trying to find all kinds of new shows to watch. Tonight they asked me if they could watch Xena. I had actually never seen the show. My concern was mostly about how sexy it may, or may not be.

So, I allowed them to watch the pilot episode, with me next to them. I told them I would switch it off ASAP if I found anything I didn't want them to see.

OK, so I only saw this one episode, and it didn't seem too bad at all. Most of the violence seemed almost comical in nature. And the sexiness was not much at all.

Is this a fair way to think the series will progress? In other words, do you think it is OK for 9 year olds?

I seem to remember most of the sexiness being more alluded to than anything else. Historical and fictional characters pop in here and there for romance and war.

Spoiler....

It gets really odd a few seasons in when Gabrielle has a baby and it's an evil spawn. Xena wants to kill it. That might raise a few issues....:scared1:

It's difficult to remember details because it has been quite some time since I've seen episodes.

I agree with Wdwiala. Xena's outfits are designed to attract the adolescent boy segment of the market, but there is no nudity or conduct that (at least in my mind) would be inappropriate for a nine-year-old.

The emphasis is on action, fights, escapes and successful (albeit often rather contriveed) resolutions to problems. And yes, the choreography of the fights at times seems almost comical.

I can't see a 9yo picking up on the lesbian aspect or care about the costuming. It is just your basic cheesy show.

Read the Wiki....Xena and Gabrielle don't ever "get together". The series finale had the appearance of a kiss when Xena was saving her life to appease the huge lesbian following of the show.

I watched it of course along with Hercules where it was spun off of.

Oh that was a great show. I loved this and Hercules. Both were very campy, but then that was part of the point. I actually didn't watch the last season as it kind of went off the rails for me then as did Hercules with Iaolus dying and coming back.

If you've seen Burn Notice then watch for Bruce Campbell, this is where I first discovered him and he's in a bunch of episodes and even directed some. I gotta agree with him that both shows should have won emmys, but they never did. Definitely fine for 9 year olds though. And if you like a jumping off point for Greek mythology.

LOL, that's my cat's name!! I named her that after my son met the "character" of Xena at Universal and literally fell in LOVE. He was 6 at the time! :lmao:

Funny, the name matches her personality to the tee!

there are a few really odd episodes that are worse... like there is one with several nude gabriels running around... still wasn't really sexual, it was meant to be comical so it really depends how sensitive your views are on these types of things.

Well hell! I always wondered what happened to Ares. He was 1 of my favorites. I completely missed the news of his death.
