Let me preface this by saying I know NOTHING about soccer, and did not watch today's match between Japan and Paraguay. My question is about how it ended on penalty kicks. 5-3. How, if teams alternate kicks, is it possible to win by a score of 5-3? Shouldn't the game have ended immediately once it got to 4-3?

Each team gets five penalty kicks.

Paraguay went first

PK 1-Paraguay scores, Japan scores
PK 2-Paraguay scores, Japan scores
PK 3-Paraguay scores, Japan misses (score is now 3-2)
PK 4-Paraguay scores, Japan scores (score is now 4-3)
PK 5-Paraguay scores, no need for Japan to take their turn since the score is now 5-3 with no chance for Japan to catch up.

When it was 4-3, after kick 4, they continued to the final PK because if Paraguay missed that one, Japan would take their turn and if they made it the two teams would be tied 4-4...then it goes to a second round of PKs. However, Paraguay made their fifth kick so no need for Japan to take their fifth kick.

the bold part is not true
it will go one from the first team and the second team get a shot but not 5 for each and this will go on until it has a difference

Put simply,

Each team has 5 penalty kicks. Minimum.

If at the end of those kicks there is a definate winner (i.e. 5-4, 3-1, 4-2 etc) that is it.

If not, it continues until there is. (so if it is 5-5 and ends up 6-5 after the additional 2 penalty kicks, the team on 6 is the winner.)

Hmm, not so simple afterall... nvm.

In a penalty situation the game officially ends in a draw. The team doesn't win or lose 5-3, they draw 0-0 and advance or are knocked out on penalties 5-3. This is how a team can be eliminated from the World Cup without ever loosing a game or even conceding a goal (see Switzerland 2006).

Penalties start as 5 for each team but can be as low as 3 for each team because once a team can not win they stop kicking. If one team makes their first 3 and the other team misses theirs they won't continue kicking the last 2. If the penalties are still tied after 5 they go to sudden death college football style. Each team gets to kick but the first team who makes a penalty in the same round that another team misses advances.
