Question about wine on DCL...

Yeah. They definitely don't do this for a living or anything.

This is what the US Customs service posted on their website. They way I interpret this is that you may not import wine for commercial purposes but if the wine is for personal use there is no limit on the amount you may bring into the US.

Bringing alcohol (including homemade wine) to the U.S. for personal use
Can I bring (carry in my baggage) back alcohol for my personal use or as a gift?

Generally, one liter of alcohol per person may be entered into the U.S. duty-free by travelers who are 21 or older, although travelers coming from the U.S. Virgin Islands or other Caribbean countries are entitled to more. Additional quantities may be entered, although they will be subject to duty and Federal excise taxes, which will be assessed and collected at the port of entry.

Alcoholic beverages purchased in duty-free shops are subject to duty and federal excise tax when accompanying you into the United States. Note: Federal excise tax rates are for informational purposes only as actual tax or fee may vary according to a person's circumstances.

It is not legal for travelers under the age of 21 to import alcohol - even as a gift.

Most States restrictions on the amount of alcohol that can be brought into that State apply only to residents of that State. Usually people transiting a state are not subject to those restrictions, but sometimes regulations change, and if this is a matter of utmost importance to you, you can check with the state Alcohol Beverage Control Board where you will be arriving to find out what their policies are.

There is no federal limit on the amount of alcohol a traveler may import into the U.S. for personal use, however, large quantities might raise the suspicion that the importation is for commercial purposes, and a CBP officer could require the importer to obtain an Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) import license (which is required for all commercial importations) before releasing it. A general rule of thumb is that 1 case of alcohol is a personal use quantity - although travelers are still subject to state restrictions which may allow less.

NOTE: The above information is applicable to homemade wine and follows the same procedure as store bought wine. The bottles should be properly labeled.

Back to the OP's question. If you are looking to save money then yes bringing your own wine onto the ship even after paying the corkage will save you money.

Your wall of text is all well and good, but when it comes down to it, it matters what Disney will allow you to bring off of the ship from their wine package, and we were told "up to two bottles". There was no, "Well, except you can pay duty on 5 more if you want to take more than that." Two. Period. As I said before, there was no equivocation. Two. Whether or not the duty regulations say differently, they said two. I tend to go with what I'm told when it comes to what they will allow you to take home from their wine packages. Everything else you bring home is up to you, but they specifically said that it was up to two bottles, and they are the ones that will hand you the box with two bottles in it.

How does Disney know how many bottles of wine you are bringing off? They only people you talk to when leaving the ship are US Customs officers?

We always try and finish any wine package bottles first, as one can always (in theory anyway if those bottles had a chance) walk off with whatever they brought onboard from PC.

Disney knows because they are the ones who hand you the leftover bottles on the last night. Hence you can only take two away from the dining room at the end of the trip, as I originally said.

So if you buy a package, can you only use those bottles during dining? You can't just show up at a bar or order one of your bottles or a glass of wine from a bottle from room service?

I think I will buy less than I think bc I don't want leftovers. I can't imagine trying to fly back with bottles of wine clanking in my backpack.. actually it wouldn't even be allowed through security & I doubt it's a good item to be in a suitcase either.
