Question about using eyelets

Ive been scrapping for a few months and keep seeing the eyelets around and there are some cute ones.. Do you have to have a certain tool or something to use these??

Yep, you need some sort of "setter" Most of us used to use the ole hammer & hole punch & setter....I found the Silent Setter by Provo Craft about 8 months ago....& I LOVE IT! No banging, no headaches! It's awesome!

Can I ask how much something like that costs?? I have spent soooo much money in the last 2 months on scrapbooking that its crazy.. Just wondering if I need to wait a little longer to get something like that,..

The old type setter is under $15 at my Hobby Lobby. It doesn't have the silent one, which I desperately want after a long weekend of scrapbooking!!

I have the Fiskars one with the spring. It's very easy to use and I like it for punching, but I'm not sure if a regular old hammer would not be better to set. If I'm doing a lot, my hand gets tired and it starts to take longer and longer to do. For a set of three, it cost me $18 at my local scrapbooking store.

If you have an ACMoore or Michaels or JoAnns nearby you can get the Making Memories toolkit with one of the 40% coupons from a Sunday paper. I think ACM carries the Silent Setter for about $20. The toolkit is also about $20.

I can't use the Silent Setter - it takes too much strength & I have a bad shoulder...so I just bang. LOL I got the toolkit because it included the hammer, the hole punches & the setter tool. The only thing is that it does NOT include a mat and the setter tool doesn't work for the very large or very tiny eyelets too well.

You can also get a universal setter tool (~$10) and then the hole punches (also ~ $10), hammer (~$5) & mat (~ $4) separately - but it costs more that way especially because you can only use the coupon on one item.

My mom has the Silent Setter by ProvoCraft
and I have the Clickit by Karen Foster Designs
both are equally easy to use. I recommend something like this rather than using a hammer.

Thanks so much guys.. I do have a Michaels closeby so I will keep an eye out for the coupon.. I cant wait to do some of these cause there is some real cute ones out there.

Call me thick but I still have trouble using the normal setter for eyelets. They just seem to flatten one way or it takes about 100 hits with the hammer to get the slightest reaction from it. Maybe I'm not doing it right. My Making Memories setter has so many heads i never know which to use!!

Some eyelets are bigger than others. You may need a different size head on it to get the right effect. Also some metal is tougher than others, so you may need to hit it more. The back of the eyelet should fit inside the edge of the head nicely without to much wiggle room. I just tried one of the mickey head eyelets with my silent setter and had to use the largest of the three. The mickeys are much bigger than most other eyelets.

Or, if you have eyelets now and really want to use them, you can always pull out your phillips screwdriver and a hammer. It works just fine to get the eyelet to "flower" in the back, then I just tap the edges down with the hammer so there aren't any sharp points.

That said, I love my simple eyelet setter. I haven't had any problems with needing to hammer. But then, I use it over a small anvil rather than a mat. A little more noise but a lot more effective.

patchchild's anvil reminded me...Make sure you're trying to set your eyelets on something very sturdy Queenie! If there's any give to the table top you're using (like many folding tables) you're going to have trouble. I try to work right over the table leg for the extra support.

I need one of those silent ones, because my head is killing me right now, I was working on my MK swap and I was using the eyelets, so much banging gave a headache!

I got several brands of eyeltes and some are so hard to do!

I found the perfect solution at Michaels this afternoon. Eyelet brads. They have the eyelet opening that shows on your page but two brads wings on the back. No more banging!
