Question about UPH's?

We are going to WDW in 2 weeks. We are booked with the Disney Visa 7 for 4 deal that includes the Ultimate Parkhopper Passes.

My sister and her boyfriend are also coming along and they have a room only reservation because they are only staying 4 nights.

They will be visiting the parks for 3 days because they are arriving late one the first day and leaving at lunch time on their last day.

I called to see about getting UPH's added to their room only reservation. It can be done, but you must purchase the tickets for all of the days that they staying (which comes out to 5 days, 4 nights). They only need 3 days and 3 nights.

I thought I had read somewhere that once you arrive, you can get a refund for the first and last days on an UPH pass.

I'm just curious to know if this is true or if anyone has any other recommendations besides purchasing the 4 day park-hopper plus ticket.

Thanks......

I have a similar situation coming up in a few weeks. Over the years I have been told several versions on what is the policy with the UPH, previously called the "length of stay pass". Understand, this is buying the UPH at the resort, not as a package before hand. At times in the past I have been told I could cut off the first day, or I could cut off the last day. Once I was told I had to buy an UPH which included the first and last day- the day I checked in and the day I checked out- with no cutting off of days.

Later this month I'm spending 3 nights at Port Orleans. I just want a two day UPH, that is what would work best for me. With three nights without cutting any days I would have to buy a 4 day UPH. I called POFQ directly and spoke to a woman there, she said it was her understanding I could cut off the first and last day if I wanted to, the first time I have ever been told that. Before I hung up she said she would check with the front desk to verify. Checked with front desk and told me that yes you can cut off first and last day.

Whether that is what happens when I check in and try to buy a two day UPH I have no idea. I don't know if every resort has a different policy or if there is some WDW wide policy or it just depends on the mood of the cast member.

When I was planning our trip for this fall, I called the Disney number and was told by the CM to do what Mousesavers.com suggests:

Make a room-only ressie for one night only- your checkin day.

Then, make a ressie for the remaining nights you intend to stay. Add the UPHs to this ressie.

There is a bit of hassle to this plan- you need to go through the checkout/checkin procedure in the morning after your first night. There is a slight chance you might have to switch rooms. They will let you know at the desk if this is so. But to me, it was worth it to save on the UPHs and not waste a day's admission to the parks that I wouldn't use.

Hope this helps- we set up our trip this way and there were no questions asked.

If you wait until check-in, the cm can, at their discretion, allow you to buy an UPH for less than the number of days on your ressie, but you can't buy in advance. We did this once at CBR.
