Question about upgrading tickets to Premier Passport

I have a question for anyone who can answer it.

I will be in Disneyland (CA) for 2 days this spring, and then Disney World (FL) for 8 this summer. I calculated pricing and prior to finding out about my Disneyland trip I was definitely getting an Annual Pass for WDW because it was worth the money in terms of room and food discounts and all of that, but now that I got surprised with a free trip to Disneyland courtesy of a friend I'm debating the Premier Passport.

Here's the problem. My Disneyland pass was purchased by a California resident for me (not my choice and not what I wanted, but that person was paying for everything for this trip as a gift and I don't have the money to do it myself). It is a 2 day park hopper So-Cal pass, which the person was told would be fine to use for a non So-Cal person because they already picked it up and showed So-Cal ID.

Before I found out this person was purchasing me a So-Cal pass my plan was to take the pass they purchased and go to Guest Relations in Disneyland and upgrade it to a Premier Passport there, so I could give them some of their money back as I was planning on purchasing an AP anyway.

My question is, if I take this So-Cal 2 day park hopper to be upgraded at Guest Relations in Disneyland am I going to have to show ID? And if so am I going to get in trouble for not having a So-Cal ID and using that pass?

I'm not trying to beat the system, and as I said my friend was told it was completely acceptable to purchase this pass and have me use it for Disneyland, I'm just not sure how it would work for the upgrading.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

At DLR do upgrade at the ticket booths.


You can upgrade from the value of the ticket you have. How much did you pay for the SoCal tickets? Nothing, so you have no value to upgrade from.

You can use the tickets to enter that park. Tickets may be gifted, not resold.

The tickets still have a value. If my FIL buys tickets for us and we decide to upgrade, they still have the value HE paid...and I can use them however I wish as long as it is within the terms of the ticket.

OP, I don't have an answer for you, but if your friend is with you when you use them I don't see any problem upgrading them.

As the PP's mentioned, receiving them as a gift from a SoCal resident IS allowed, and I have a feeling that if you tell anyone at the ticket booth when you upgrade your story as you have told us, they should not have any problem with the upgrade.

My mistake for calling it Guest Relations and not realizing it was the ticket booth. Clearly you can tell I've been to WDW and not DLR

My friend and I will definitely go to the ticket booth and see what they say once I'm there. Hopefully they'll be in a good mood and will allow me to use the value to upgrade They'll be making a bundle off of it anyway

Your reply indicates you don't have experience upgrading tickets.


The CM may ask questions about the ticket you want to upgrade.
Where did you buy this ticket?
How many did you buy at that time?
How much did you pay?
When did you first use them?
Etcetra.

They do this to figure out if you can legitimately upgrade the tickets.

Actually I have upgraded tickets. And once I answer my FIL John Doe purchased them for us, we will move on to and have no problems answering the questions about use. PLUS if my FIL was with me (like OPs friend will be with him/her) it will be absolutely no problem. Just because the person upgrading didn't purchase the tickets, they ARE the ones they belong to once they are used.

Normal questions that the ticket booth may ask upon upgrading tickets has to do with how the tickets were used. For example, what day did you first use this ticket? What park did you enter on that day? Questions along those lines. Not all tickets are purchased from Disney, so they would not even have access to questions such as how many tickets you bought and how much they were. You can buy a ticket at a grocery store. Disney has no information when and what method of payment you used.

OP, you can upgrade tickets that are a gift. I have done so in the past. Be prepared to answer questions such as the ones I mentioned above. They do this to prevent people from selling used tickets for their upgrade value, etc. I have also received So-Cal tickets as a gift from my in-laws and had absolutely no problem using them in the parks. Go and have fun and upgrade as needed.

OP: Make sure you do the math. The Premier currently cost $771. Unless you plan to buy a Premium AP at WDW or go back to DL within the year, you may be better off not upgrading to the Premier. -- Suzanne

Which leads me to another question: if you win APs through a contest, would you be able to upgrade those into PAPs? My wishful hope is to win the DAPs from the Ralph's Carsland sweepstakes and for DBF to win the Carsland Party passes. And then magically appear in Club 1901. Would it be possible to upgrade the DAPs to PAPs?

I actually had number crunched plenty, and we're planning on going to the water parks and golfing enough in WDW for the Premium Annual Pass to make financial sense, hence why I wanted to upgrade to the Premier Passport (for only about $80 more).

OK, so since the OP's question was answered, riddle me this...we have 10-day NE WDW tix with 4 days used on them. Paid $496/437 each for them back in 2009. I was told over the phone by DLR tix line that the only way I could upgrade my tickets for DLR tix would be to a PAP (otherwise it's a day-for-day swap @ the gate). What value would be assigned to our WDW tix to upgrade to a PAP?

The value of your tickets at Disneyland is in general the price you paid for them. If you paid $496, when you upgrade to the Premium ($499) you would pay $4 for the upgrade.

Now I have never seen/heard of someone upgrading a WDW hopper for a Disneyland AP. So I am not even sure it can be done. But if it can then you would pay $4 for each adult & $62 for the childrens pass upgrades. There are no child pricing for Annual Passes.

My Answer is the same, just the math would be different:

Price of Pass - Price you Paid = cost to upgrade.

No, the CM I spoke with said PAP (I took notes), and she went off for clarification each time I asked more specific questions about the WDW ticket exchange and/or upgrading the tix (specifically to include adding hopper). One would assume that more than one CM (or a CM of a higher order) was involved. Perhaps another call to clarify further is necessary. The other issue that is involved is the 14-day since first use period has passed, so the question may be moot anyway (but then begs the question why would they state a PAP upgrade was possible anyway when I gave the CM the timelines as well?). I've been around the block a few times with WDW tix and tix upgrades (see my sig ), but not DLR. 'Getting' how WDW tix stuff works is one thing, factor in DLR tix, and I'm about to start playing It's a Small World After All on my lips with my index finger.

Well, first of all, CM's are notorious for giving the wrong information. The CM you spoke to probably wasn't even in California, let alone working at a Disneyland ticket booth.

The 14-day rule doesn't apply if your tickets for WDW are NON-expiring, as you said. Guests all the time confirm that NON-expiring WDW tickets can be exchanged day-for-day, as you mentioned, at the parks (although it requires some time and a manager). You've never been able to apply WDW tickets toward hoppers or AP's though, so if a CM told you that you could do this toward a PREMIUM passport and not the PREMIER passport that's good for WDW and DL, she was either confused OR aware of something that none of us here is aware of. I'm leaning toward the former, but I can't say that with 100% certainty, since I'm not a CM at DL I would certainly call back not just one more time, but a few more times if you seriously intend to try this.

Gotcha. I guess I meant the 14-day rule didn't apply to do the day-for-day exchange, since people use tickets that are years old! Good to know about the upgrade to Premier rule though.
