Question about upgrading old child's park ticket

I know this question has been asked before, but I cannot find an answer using the "search" button...I am hoping someone is patient with me and willing to help me out....

It has been about 4 years since our last trip to WDW. We have a collection of partially used tickets - some issued before the expiry/non-expiry option (and I believe issued before they were taking fingerprints at the gate) and we also have some non-expiry generation tickets.

We got all the tickets when my kids were under 9, so they have child's tickets. DSs will be 10 & 12 before we will visit WDW again.

My question is...What will happen when we try to use the child tickets at the gate? Will we have to upgrade the child's tickets to adult tickets? What will the cost be? If we have to upgrade, will we have to pay extra for the water park options still left on the tickets too?

Given the economy (especially the poor economy here in MI), I want to estimate the cost of our trip as closely as possible...I don't like surprises (especially the ones that cost me extra $$!).

TIA!

When we took an old ticket for one of the kids we needed to go to will call (or whatever it is called) by the entrance and they traded the child ticket for an adult ticket without any charge to us.

if it was used by your child, then it's still his and he can use it now. There shouldn't be a charge for it. Kinda like if you buy an AP for a 9 year old, and then the child becomes 10. He can still use it until it expires.

Although I'm sure you'll need to make a trip to the ticket window to exchange to a current ticket for it to work properly. And they'll be able to tell you how many days are left on them. Although I'd doubt you could "upgrade" your ticket with any options. You'll only be left with what is currently on your ticket.

There's a sticky thread on the Theme Parks Advice & Strategies board titled "Everything About Tickets" (or, well, something like that ;)) with the official answer to this and many other ticket-related questions.

You might want to look at the Everything About WDW Tickets locked sticky in the TPA&S Forum. Especially the items bolded in the list below.

Does the new ticket (child ticket traded in for adult)
have the child's name on it
I am guessing it has to be used by the same child
and I am not sure exactly which of my children it belongs to

I have found one old ticket so far, probably have another one or so stashed away with days left on it

Thanks for the info and the link!
I now have my answer...no surprises!

If you all went to Disney at the same times then it won't matter if your children got the wrong tickets.

The suggestion going around even among CM's is for the original owner to simply try to use the ticket as-is.

It is an old Park Hopper Plus, so I am sure we will need to exchange it. I read your site, and know not to pay any money on the exchange. What kind of ticket do you get on the exchange? If there is only one day left, will they give a one day pass? Wondering if I can use this to get the birthday fast pass, instead of for park admission.....

Look at Post #8 in the sticky above. It deals with Pre-MYW tickets. They will give you a ticket equal to what is remaining on the old ticvkets, include Plus visits.

When you exchange your child ticket for an adult ticket, what you get back may or may not be labeled with the number of days remaining.

If it is not labeled "1 day" then there is a good chance the CM might not investigate and find out that just one day remains and none of the days were used on this vacation hence you should receive only the birthday admission.

It is not cost effective to use the one leftover day when you need to buy and use another ticket card during this vacation and also the vacation will have more than 3 theme park days. The birthday gift card choice exists because it does not attract guests to refund just, say, day six (worth $3.) because it is your birthday and also Disney does not want to hand you cold hard cash to refund day one (worth $75.) out of your pre-existing multi-day ticket on your birthday.

That's what I was hoping, non labelled, no name on ticket so it could be used for the fastpass. I am ALL about cost effective! Thanks!
