Question about Upgrades

I have read a lot of posts on upgrades, the best ways to get them, who has gotten them, who has not, etc. My question is what are these upgrades that people ask for. I have never stayed at Disney before. I am staying in the swan with a standard view room, what kinds of upgrades could I ask for that I might actually get?

When I called to make a reservation at the Dolphin they suggested that I get the Starwood Preferred Guest (spg) card. The card is free and you can sign-up online! Being a member of Spg will make it possible for a free upgrade at check-in ...just remember that free upgrades are possible but not guaranteed!

I'm pretty new to Spg, but there are TONS of really knowledgable people on the DISboards! Good Luck!
