Question about tonight's 3 Wishes

I'm catching the end of the "Shane" story....the football guy...and I can't figure it out. Did he play football? If not, why not? Did he have an accident? What's the deal?

He had some type of a leg malady from birth and can not play sports.

The whole show brought tears to my eyes
