Question about Tonga Toast

We were thinking about trying this on our upcoming trip. I read the description of what it is over at Debs site. I was wondering how much bread it is as compared to the bananas. I'm hoping that its more banana than bread. Can someone maybe describe it in a little more detail.

Also, will we need a ps to eat there or should we be able to just show up? We would be eating a later breakfast if that matters.

It's thick. The bread and bananas are probably equal. It is rolled in cinnamon sugar. I think its a bit greasy, its very sweet, it does not need syrup and I would share it because it is heavy.

You can probably skip lunch if you eat the whole thing yourself. But let me just say...It is DEELISH!! :teeth:

its definitely more bread than bananas...but its a good mix of the two when it comes to taste

its huge

I actually prefer the stuffed toast at boatwrights more cause of the strawberry sauce they put on it

sharing is an excellent idea! i ate about half of mine while my husband ate all of his!! be sure to check out the chocolate lilo and stitch. :earboy2:

The Tonga toast had, by weight, roughly equal amounts of bread, butter, and bananas. The banana is a flavoring, not the bulk of the dish. But it was superb. Light in texture due to the bread, but intensely flavorful and buttery. I wouldn't miss it.

As for the PS, if you've got your heart set on a place, you should always get the PS. We were there last September during Food and Wine, and it didn't seem especially busy.

Excuse me? What? Chocolate Lilo and Stitch. You MUST explain more!!! :)
At the Kona Cafe there's a large Lilo & Stitch made entirely in chocolate.

The Lilo and Stitch are chocolate carvings. You can't eat them and since they have been there at least a year since they were there when we went in March 2004, you wouldn't want to. Before the Lilo and Stitch they had dragons.

I've tried Tonga Toast twice now after hearing about how great it is. First time was when we first stayed at the Contemporary it was on the in room dining menu (it no longer is) and it was delicious.

Then I tried it again at Kona Cafe this past August and I was a bit disappointed. It seemed very greasy; like the bread soaked up some of the oil or whatever they use to fry it. I don't think I'll be trying it again any time soon.

I have only one word for Tonga Toast....YUM!

Thanks for all the great replies! I think I will go ahead and make a PS for us. Since you all say it is heavy, I'm thinking we will do a late breakfast, then maybe a light snack for lunch (if we need anything), then we have a PS for CP at 8:10 that night so it should work out ok. Thanks again for the info.

I think that's a good idea. We had a late breakfast at the Kona Cafe on the day I had the Tonga Toast and I felt it worked out great. I think it might've been a bit too heavy first thing in the morning, but it was good for a "brunch" type of meal. I hope you enjoy it :)

I had the Tonga Toast at the Kona Cafe a while back and was not only disappointed with how greasy it was, but the service was horrible! Our waitress would disappear for looong periods while we needed coffee, juice etc. I have no plans to go back to the Kona...
