If I were going to be at WDW for 5 park days, but wanted to visit 2 parks on only 2 days, can I buy a 7 day magic your way ticket instead of a park hopper for the whole trip? it seems a little less expensive to do it that way. Has anybody done this?

Which is exactly why you can't do it.
If you could, why would anyone buy hoppers?

Without the park hopper option you will not be able to visit two different theme parks on the same operating day using the same MYW ticket.

If you had two separate MYW tickets, you could use one for one park and the other for a different park.

Nope. Non hopper tickets state one park per DAY.

yes, it's cheaper. Precisely why Disney doesn't allow it. You'll need the hopper which is a flat rate for all days.

Nope. If you want to park hop, you'll need to buy park hoppers.

All of the above.
We always buy the park hoppers. I love having it in case we finish a park before expected and want to go to another. Or maybe we planned on a restful evening at our resort but decided on fireworks :)

No the turnstile will not allow it. You can only do two parks on the same day if you have purchased the park hopper option.

We are buying hoppers for a 6 day trip beginning 1/1 only because we want to see the Osbourne Lights on 1/2 and 1/3, and can't see spending one whole day in DHS. let alone two. Normally go without them prior to beginning of the gutting of DHS.

The hopper comes in handy if you grab dinner reservations at a different park from the one that you were planning to go to for the day.

disney realizes its cheaper to just use another day of the ticket which is why they don't allow it.
the computer recognizes that you were already in another park that day so if you don't have park hopper it will deny you entry.

if you want to go to more than one park per day you need the park hopper option or you need separate tickets which would cost you way more than park hopper would.

non-hoppers won't get you into more than one park per day, no matter how many days are on the ticket. To the Disney computer, a day on a non-hopper equals just that - one day. You'd need to add the hopper for the entire ticket, which might give you additional flexibility outside the days you currently want it for. The hopper would be much more economical than purchasing an additional separate ticket for those two days, which is the other option.

So is there a consensus on this? Just kidding - that was a lot of answers pretty quickly.

I'm just curious how the finger scan would affect this. If you did have two separate tickets, could you go to two different parks and just scan a different finger at the second park? Or would the finger scan not even matter since it is an entirely different ticket?

If I had a free ticket that was given to me through an organization, but it cannot be upgraded to the park hopper, could I buy my own ticket and use one ticket to go to Epcot and one ticket to go to Hollywood Studios in the same day?

I know the hopper option is normally cheaper than two separate tickets, but in this case since my first ticket was given to me, it would actually be cheaper to me to just buy a one day one park ticket. Plus Disney would make money from the sale of the additional ticket.

Thanks.

having two separate tickets would have no effect on the finger scanner.
no reason to scan a different finger.
the system would recognize it as a completely different ticket and completely different finger scan.

You can buy a separate ticket and then go into two different parks on the same day. In this scenario, you have two tickets, NOT a two-day ticket.

With a multi-day ticket, once you scan your finger, that is the finger connected to that ticket. If you try to use a different finger on a different day or at a different park on the same day, it won't recognize it, and you won't be allowed in the park at all.

Sure. Not a problem.

The finger scan is not a factor in this at all.
