Question about sugar-free desserts

My parents will be joining us for a few days of our next WDW trip, and will be coming to MK and Epcot with us. My father is diabetic (thank goodness he is not on medication and is controlling it very well through diet and exercise...so proud of him! ;)). We will be eating at CRT for dinner at MK. Is there a sugar-free dessert option at the CRT dinner? If not, when I make the ADR could I put in a request for either a sugar-free dessert or fruit for my father?

Also, I know that some CS places offer sugar-free desserts. What are they like? This is just in case he decides to get one at a CS, although that is not likely. I know that most CS places have fruit available. My parents will not be on any of the dining plans, so it is more likely that my dad will not even bother with dessert at a CS location unless he decides he should/wants to have some fruit.

The other TS restaurant they are definitely going to is Akershus at Epcot for lunch, in Norway. They will be going there with my sister and her girls, but we are probably not joining them for that meal, which means my sister would be making the ADR (but I will remind her to put in a special request if necessary). Is there a sugar-free dessert option there? If not, would they offer him some fruit?

They also plan on snacking around the WS instead of doing an actual dinner when they are in Epcot. Of course, my dad can't take advantage of the sweeter snacks like schoolbread in Norway or pastries in France, but what are some other smaller items you would recommend throughout the WS that would be safe for a diabetic to enjoy? He may just end up getting an actual CS meal, but I know they would really rather snack around and enjoy something in a few of the countries without totally stuffing themselves silly! They would probably just share a bunch of small things, kind of like when DH and I snack around the world (except we do it between meals, not instead of meals :rotfl:).

Thanks in advance!!

you can look up the menu's at allears.net to give you an idea. if they don't have anything on the list just mention it to them and i'm sure they will do something.

Thank you. I did this and there are some options. I did not see any on the Akershus menu though, but I'm sure they would give my father some fruit or something as his dessert. When ADRs are made, we will make sure that his diabetes is indicated in them.

Are there any sugar-free/no-sugar-added desserts at any CS locations in MK or Epcot in particular that taste really good? My parents will not be on any dining plan, so in case my dad wants to try a CS dessert at either park, it will cost them extra. However, I don't want him to have to waste money on something that tastes terrible. I know sometimes sugar-free/no-sugar-added desserts taste gross, while other times they taste delicious. I also noticed that at BW Bakery they have sugar-free cheesecake. How is this? Usually he likes sugar-free cheesecake. My sister and I make it for him, and he loves the one here in Brooklyn, NY from Junior's Restaurant.

Any opinions on sugar-free/no-sugar-added items would be greatly appreciated!

The sugar free raspberry sorbet at CRT is soooo good!!
they also have it at the ice cream parlor on Main Street. It is my favorite dessert in all WDW (I am also diabetic).
Just ask at the places and most have some kind of sugar free/no sugar added dessert on request.
I find a lot of them don't taste very good though, I usually skip dessert or just eat a little of something that tastes good.

Thank you! My dad likes sugar-free ice cream so I am sure he would like the sorbet. The only thing he really doesn't like for dessert is anything orange flavored, and he hates oranges and orange juice. Raspberry would be great for him!

My dad does what you do a lot of times...he either skips dessert altogether or enjoys a bite or 2 of something that one of us is enjoying. Recently we took him out for his retirement but there was no sugar-free dessert available (he was fine with this). My mom ordered tartufo for dessert (chocolate-covered ice cream dessert for those of you who have never had it), and my dad took a couple of bites of it. His doctor says this is OK to do once in a while, just to only have a little bit and not a whole dessert. When we have a family gathering for a celebration we always make sure there is a sugar-free dessert for him. Either my sister or I will make something sugar-free or we get something at the bakery. Fortunately our local bakeries make lots of delicious single-serving sugar-free items. In fact, the owner of one of the bakeries (which happens to be my father's favorite one) is also diabetic and they sell so many sugar-free items, from danish to cheesecake to brownies to individual lemon meringue pies. And everything tastes so good too! But there are times we are having a family function and my dad requests not to have a sugar-free dessert and says he will just skip dessert (we always have fruit salad also so he has a little but of that sometimes instead). He also does not like to over-do it on the sugar-free items, as they still contain white flour which he tries to limit.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

If you make ADR's be sure to add a note about diet restrictions to the reservation.

Even if it's not on the menu, most restaurants will have a sugar-free option. As restaurant budgets continue to be slashed, I have found they are not always great choices...but they are something.

Now, if you are out on the Boardwalk at BWI/BWV stop in at Boardwalk Bakery.....they have a very good sugar-free cheesecake. We stay at BWI and my DH (built like a long-tall-SKINNY-stick) always buys sugar free cheesecake for me....just to listen to my YUMMY noises at the end of the day when I enjoy the treat.

I did the MK Dessert party and they made me a huge tray of sugar free desserts. There was some fresh fruit, 2 kinds of sugar free sorbet which were amazing, there was a brownie that tasted like sawdust and some cheesecake that was dry and awful.

Last August when we had dinner at Akershus, the chef brought my daughter a HUGE fruit platter since she couldn't eat anything off the appetizer/meat&cheese buffet (allergies). They definitely had a nice selection of fruit. When I say huge, I mean big enough that she hardly touched her amazing dinner (she left plenty of room for dessert though :thumbsup2)

DH and I and our boys are staying at BWV but my parents are staying at Pop Century, as are my sister and her girls. But, my sister and I were talking about doing a "girls only" afternoon tea (me, my mom, my sister and my nieces) at the Grand Floridian the afternoon we arrive, so the men and boys would probably hang out at the Boardwalk while we are waiting for our villa to be ready, since there is so much to do at the Boardwalk. I will keep the sugar-free cheesecake in mind for my dad if we all decide to do that! Or, DH and I could always pick some up for my dad and surprise him!
