Question about spec ed children and homework

You're living in a fairly tale if you think you have any real clout with the school system. yes, you can ask for an ARD any time you wish, but they don't have to schedule it just when you want. They can drag out scheduling it 'till the point that the whole issue becomes stale. Believe me, the more you fight the more your child loses. Its all a farce!

You know, that is true a lot of times. I wanted an IEP meeting one year for DS and the school put me off until the school year was finally over and it was too late.

When I taught, if a parent wanted a meeting, BOOM we had one, even if it was on an early out day, or the last day before a vacation. We had to accomodate. But it isnt' always that way.

I would still ask for one and try to get one though.

One thing to consider (well, maybe two...) Are you going through the office and getting cleared to go into the school? Since Columbine, 9/11, and a rash of bomb threats in my town, our schools have very strict protocol about entering school property, especially the elementary schools and middle school. You have to sign in and receive a visitor tag/ID badge in the office before you proceed to a classroom. The teacher is also notified and has to verify that you are expected. Are you skipping some security step?

Second - to all of the parents that go back and get the stuff your kids forget - when/how do they learn to take on that responsibilty themselves? I realize it can be a different situation for a developmentally delayed child, but natural consequences of not bringing home homework (having to do it during recess, etc) might help remedy the problem. How about using a paper bag for the lunch, so it's one less thing for the child to have to remember?
