Question about signed T-shirts

I had some T-shirts signed by the characters with a regular Sharpie permanent marker. Not the laundry kind. Do I need to do something special to the shirts before I wash them? I'm afraid that the ink will come off. After I got back from the trip I noticed that the Sharpie states that it's not for use on cloth. My kids love their shirts, and I want to make sure that they don't get ruined!

Heat set the shirt in the dryer or iron befire washing. I did both. The colors did fade slightly after washing the first time but still look good. The shirt has been washed at least a dozen times and the signatures are still there!

you could also use black embroidery floss and chainstitch the signature outline//I did this on my daughter's stuffed Pluto using a different color of floss for each character, i.e. black for Mickey, red for Minnie, purple for Goofy, etc.//
