I'm planning a trip for DN's 16th birthday. Recently she has been seen by a neurologist for coordination / balance issues (walking), and we're a bit concerned how she'll be able to handle the upcoming trip. She's already said she refuses to use a wheelchair if she doesn't have to and honestly she may not need one. I'm just thinking that with all the walking we'll be doing, even if we slow it down a lot, that it may be too much for her.
I already booked the trip and paid for it, so is it too late to request a floor on the first floor? Possibly one that is close to the main building (not a priority though) and one the has a bar in the shower. I know that faxes sometimes get overlooked, so how would I go about doing this? Also can you rent a wheelchair for the entire trip? I'd like to be able to have it for the resort if possible. Thanks

I just went in January with my parents - ages 79 and 81 - probably 9 months ahead of time I requested a handicap accessible room for them. As it turns there out there was only one 2 bedroom, boardwalk view that had that - so I'd definitely recommend calling to add that request sooner rather than later. We also rented two manual wheelchairs from Apple Scooter - it was only $10 a day and they delivered to our hotel and then picked them up at the end of our vacation. My dad really didn't want to use one, but after the first day when he saw how much walking there was he changed his mind. So... if $10 a day won't break the bank it might be worth having a wheelchair available.

to rent a wheelchair for the whole time, you can rent one from an offsite company. I have heard great things about Apple Scooter.

Most people walk 6-10 miles a day in Disney, and queues are often dark with sloped or uneven pavement. As someone with coordination/balance problems, I can tell you this can be very hazardous.

About the room - you can request an accessible room without a roll in shower. These have extra handrails in the bathtub. You can also request a shower chair, so she can sit.

Almost all disney hotels have elevators, so no worries about stairs there. I think POR Alligator Bayou and OKW are the only ones without elevators.

We spent a week in WDW in January, with DD16, who used a wheelchair just about the entire time. We did rent from an offsite company (don't recall which one) & it was a blessing. We did use it a lot, just for getting around our resort (SSR). It was nice also, to have it for DTD.
