I'm new to this portion of the DIS...and in need of some help. I'm interested possibly in renting out or transferring. How does it work? How do you secure payment, reservations for the renting party or transferring party?? I'm a fairly new DVC member as well, so forgive me if this isn't posted in the right place.. Thanks!

I would start by going to the DVC Rent/Trade Board and reviewing the information in the **How to use this Board** thread. There are suggestions there for both member and renter about making the process go smoothly.

Above all, be sure to protect yourself in any transaction. Any method of payment is fine as long as you wait for verification that it has cleared. If travel is within 30 days, I would not even make the reservation without payment in full since the points would go into Holding if canceled later.

Above, make sure you gain and get trust from the other party by providing information they can use to contact you during the process.

I totally agree with WebmasterDoc!!!

I just rented out 362 points to one person, and transferred the remaining 18 points I had to another DVC member!! I had also rented my points out a few years ago and that went smooth!! Just remember, you control everything so it takes a little work, since the person your "renting" to cannot contact DVC at all!! If you transfer the points to someone, who would obviously be a DVC member, then they can control them after that!!

Come up with a contract to cover you and the renter as well as setting the payment schedule!! :thumbsup2

Also keep in mind that points that are banked or borrowed cannot be transferred, and you can only do one transfer (in or out) per year. It's in the rules, but is often overlooked I've found, leading to disappointed members trying to transfer.

Plus the UY your transfer in or out must match. Meaning if you need 2012 points, you need to transfer in 2012 points. You cannot borrow transferred points, but you can bank them.

Question: is that one transfer in or out per use year or per annual year?

I did a transfer in jan of '12 for '11 uy points, so I'm good either way, but need to be clear on this as I'm making plans for the next 3 years.
