Hi
I hope I am in the right place for these questions. I am considering renting points from a DVC member. I know the member needs to make the actual reservation, but once it's made, does the member make the dining reservations and buy theme park tickets? Is the renter never given the liberty to inquire about the transaction directly?

If you are not the owner of the points, you cannot call Member Services about the reservation. You will have to purchase your own tickets and make your own dining reservations. If you decide to purchase the dining plan or need to use Magical Express, the member will need to add it to the reservation for you. If you purchase the dining plan, it will have to be paid for when it is added to the reservation.

You have no control over the reservation until the moment you check in.

It used to be in the members name... now it is changed.. the reservation is in your name, you pull it up under your username password and make all the dining, magical express, ect...

Thank you for your quick replies. What is a standard safe practice to avoid being cheated? Pay a certain percentage initially, receive a confirmation, then pay the balance to the member?

Get to know the member you are purchasing the reservation from. The member will set the terms for payment. If you don't like their terms, find another member. But it may all change if you are looking for a hard to get reservation or short notice reservation.

Even though the renter's name is on the reservation and they may be able to see it, it still remains in the control of an owner and that owner can cancel it right up until check in.

The renter will not be able to add the dining plan or make any changes to the account--only the owner can.

So a worst case scenario would be that when the renter arrived, the reservations could be cancelled while en route by the owner? Im sure that has happened, and no recourse can be taken?

You could try and sue them. But yeah. Its a private transaction between two individuals. Disney does not suddenly step in and provide you a room (they may follow up for fraud, but not on your behalf, on theirs). It almost never happens, though - and seldom when you rent points through this site.

You make your own dining reservations. The member makes Magical Express arrangements and arranges for the dining plan. Once you have a room, ME and the dining plan, you won't need your member any longer.

The biggest risk is not in getting cheated, but in you or the member not understanding what is going on. Cancellations with DVC are complex. Consider the transaction non-refundable and get your own travel insurance if you feel its necessary. Understand the difference between DVC and a room through CRO (less housekeeping, for instance. A studio will have a queen bed and a full pullout). You don't get fresh towels every day. MANY MANY people don't mind these things - some prefer it to a CRO room, but once in a while someone doesn't understand and is disappointed in their trip.

Also, an owner's reservations will all be cancelled if they decide to sell their ownership, or if they fall behind on their dues. Just something to consider as well...a lot of trust is involved, and it will never be a guarantee for anyone renting from a private owner. There are risks and if you are not willing to accept them, then you need to stick with renting via Disney direct (CRO).

The reservations might also be cancelled by DVC if they find out the owner is making commercial rentals (usually more than 20 a year).

There are several threads on this board about renting but if you are someone who has never rented before you have to be careful. if you are going to get your reservation from a DVC member off the rent/trade board here at the Dis then you need to do your homework. I would never rent from a new DVC member (3 years or less owner) just to be safe. You can ask for references but those can be friends saying they have rented. I have rented many times and always provide a copy of my DVC ID card (with my numbers blocked) that shows I have been a member since 1997. I give at least 3 references of people I have rented to around the country (can tell by area code) to give the renter some confidence.

Bottom line is it is a trust transaction. be careful

I think its more likely that you rent a RCI trade and RCI cancels it. Not here, but if you find your rental via eBay.....

Thanks for all your help. I knew about the room set up and lack of housekeeping, but never knew about the reservation being cancelled because of dues in arrears, but that would make sense.

Unless you are renting to or from someone you personally know, I consider the whole thing to be too risky to be worth it (for the seller and the renter), but especially so for the renter.
