Question about refillable mugs at Poly

Everyone was so helpful with answers to my other question... maybe someone can help me with this one. I think we are going to stay 5 nts at CS and then 3 at Poly. If we buy the mugs at CS, I know that technically we are not supposed to fill them at the Poly, but I'm wondering if anyone really checks... I wouldn't normally even do something like this, but I'm thinking that it is so expensive to stay at the Poly and if we just paid for the mugs a few days before it seems kind of silly to buy new ones for the Poly. Any suggestions??

Woo-hoo!!! Pool Hopping and now Re-fillable Mugs! It's the daily double!

Yes, technically it's a no-no. However, nowadays enforcement is so lax that basically if it holds liquid you can use it for soft drinks at the self-serve drink islands at the resorts with little or no fear of being stopped by a CM. However, if you want to follow the rules, you usually can explain your situation to the cashier at your new resort and ask to "swap" your old resort mugs for new ones. After getting over their shock that you actually care more about the rules than they do, they are likely to give you new mugs so you can drink guilt-free. If not, they're almost certain to say "Don't worry about it!"

Buy new mugs. This is a very very hot topic. Be prepared to be flamed.

I go to the Poly quite a bit and have seen CMs confront folks with the wrong mug. They will tell you that you need to buy a new mug. It can be quite embarrassing when it happens. The last family I saw was mortified. So buy a new one because that is what you are supposed to do anyway.

They must have been new on the job! :teeth:

Seriously tough, if for some strange reason the CMs at the Poly have taken the odd stance that the signs mean what they say, then ask if they'll swap your CSR mugs for Poly mugs. Many people have reported success after asking to do so.

Of course that means you loss the ability to use the old mugs on your next trip to CSR! ;)

Okay... thanks for the warning. I was hoping that it wasn't going to offend or bother anyone, but I didn't realize it was a hot topic. I probably wouldn't do it anyway, as I said, it isn't the kind of thing we would normally do. I think I was just in shock from pricing out my vacation and had a temporary lapse in judgement. I do want to clarify though, I would never "pool hop". I am going to be staying at the Poly for 3 nights after 5 nights at Coronado Springs. But there's an idea... maybe we should stay at CS all 8 nights and just head over to the Poly for the pool and to fill up our mugs... just kidding :)

Thanks for the fast responses!! We'll be buying new mugs at the Poly.

Although it is of great debate reusing mugs on return visits, this one I would say would be easier to answer. I know they are a little pricey, but go ahead and purchase new mugs at the Polynesian. If I am returning to a resort that I have already purchased a mug for, such as my last visit to the Wilderness Lodge, I reuse that mug. I would not, however, use it at a different resort, such as the Floridian.

None taken, and no bother. I've gotten to the point where I can laugh at the whole absurdity of the situation ! (Can you tell!)

I just found the pool hopping thread and realized that you weren't referring to my post as being about pool hopping, but that both questions were posted so close together! I found that thread amusing, too.

Does anyone know what Disney does with the old mugs that people trade in for a new one if they change resorts? I wouldn't do that anyway because I'd be embarrassed to give them this dirty, used mug, but I wonder what they do with them?

Glad out found the other thread and realized what I was referring to. All we need for a Resort Board "hot button" trifecta is for someone to ask if it's OK to sneak a 5th person over the age of 3 into a room at the All-Stars!

I haven't a clue what they do with the old mugs. To be honest, I don't think many people bother to ask about swapping mugs. For starters, a lot of people that stay at the resorts don't buy mugs. On top of that a don't think that there are many people outside of the strange crowd that hangs out here that bothers with staying in two resorts in the same WDW stay. Take that small population and then cleave off the large percentage of people that reuse their mugs at different resorts and on different visits with impuniety (with or without the food court's permission). What you're left with is a pretty small set of people.

My guess is that they toss the used mugs.

I thought you weren't allowed to use your old mugs from previous years or am I wrong?

I thought you had to purchase new one each year...

Again, technically you are correct. Many resorts have signs posted that say just that. But again, chaos reigns. When asked, most CMs will tell you that they are good for "life" even though signs posted only a few feet away contradict that. Other CMs will also tell you that any resort mug is can be reused at any resort. Still another smaller group of CMs will tell you when asked that as long as the mug has "Disney" somewhere on it then it's good at their resort... for "life".

this whole mug thing is ridiculous. People are way too uptight. There are bigger tragedies in the world to worry about than some people using a mug from a different resort.

I'm not sure I buy that end of the logical spectrum either. That response can be used with regard to a lot of behaviors you can witness at WDW: line cutting, mis-use of guest assistance cards, children that are rude and out of control, etc. etc. I don't fault people for simply asking questions and others for answering them. Nor for explaining the "rules" as well as the "practice" of the matter.

No, it doesn't get ridiculous until the time that the thread grows to 10 pages with charges and counter-charges being leveled (including who's going to be smoking a fecal cigar in Hades over their position), people firing off letters and e-mails to WDW on the subject, etc. etc. ad nausium... Which happens from time to time here.
