If you can't or don't want to upgrade due to costs - there are ways around this. My kids aren't into most of the regular
DDP options at WDW, but with planning - it is doable. Some strategies:
1) Use kids CS credits for breakfasts (often more variety)
2) Make sure to go to CS places with the most variety like Wolfgang Puck Express, Sunshine Seasons, various places in World Showcase.
3) Go to places with no kids menu like Main St. Bakery or Starring Rolls
4) Let kid get 'snack meals' a couple times - like a bagel, smoothie and fruit as a lunch OR baked potato, fruit and cake.
5) For Table Service meals - eat one or two signature meals to really give a much larger variety for the child
6) For Table Service meals - plan a bunch of buffet meals - where adults and kids can have anything available
7) Split some larger CS adult meals when the kids menu doesn't appeal - maybe add on one or two sides using snack credits to split the meal among 2 people.
Using many of these strategies...We have used the DDP multiple times for my kids who are now 8 and 9 and they have only rarely had to resort to the 'usual' kids fare (and even then, it was usually because they WANTED pizza or other once or twice during the trip).
