Question About Point Charts

I have a rather complicated question about point charts. I'm going to try to word it in a way that everyone can understand what I'm asking.

So, each resort has a finite number of points available correct? When point charts are released each year do the total number of points each room costs rise every year? I guess what I'm asking is have those of you who bought DVC years ago seen the buying power of your contracts go down in the time since you bought it?

DVD can't just keep increasing the number of points each stay costs every year, like the prices for the cash rooms do, because there are a finite number of points available right? So if I bought into DVC 20 years ago and it cost 10 points for a studio at OKW for one night. That same room wouldn't cost me a minimum of 15 points today right?

correct. this is the way it was explained to me. Also explains how disney uses ROFR to purchase back points they can re-sell to current DVC members as addons. The limted quantity all but guarantees point charts stay the same.

Excellent. Thank you.

I understand that point costs vary based on season and such. Christmas week takes more points than September for example. I just wasn't sure if they basically adjusted the points between the different categories as they feel necessary or if everything just kept going up like the prices for cash rooms.

The overall total of points at the resort can't change. But because DVC has some responsibility towards usage they have done some reallocations that have shifted point requirements for some rooms but the overall total has to remain the same. It is a rare thing for them to do though. So for example, if that studio had gone from 10 points up to 15 points it means that some other room would have had a decrease in point requirements. Or it might just be a shift across seasons so the studio that used to cost 10 points in adventure season and 20 in the magic season might shift to 15 points in adventure season and 15 points in magic season. There are limits on how much they can shift on a single reallocation but that would be the way that points for a room might shift.

As you research more you will find that DVC is basically a protection against Disney Inflation which runs about 3% higher than average inflation. For me, I married into a Disney family that goes 3-4x a year from Ohio. For my wife and i to be able to buy 200 points resale, add on 25 direct to receive DVC perks, it made a ton of financial sense. We would normally stay at Moderates when attending, so for us the purchase pays for itself within 5 years and then we will have 30+ years more of trips and fun times. We have a newborn and looking forward to a lifetime of memories.

Also, it feels as if you are a part of a community of folks who have a passion similar to yours. Just being on this board for the last 3 months has made me feel extremely welcome as a new member to the Disney Country Club.

And to add - when they do reallocations points can be shifted across villa sizes so an increase for studios might be offset by a decrease for 2BR's. Or a decrease for GV's might be offset by increases for studios and 1BR's etc.

I can't remember the exact numbers, but isn't the maximum "reallocation" be about 15-20% per year?

So, they couldn't bump a studio in magic season from 10 to 20 points per night in a single year, correct?

Right.

For more info and an interesting example, see post 6 in this thread. Back when weekend nights were a lot more expensive, studio weeknights at OKW were extremely cheap...

The only way for the total number of points to change is for DVC to add lodging at that resort. Like at OKW, they tore down the Commodore House about 1999 and built three more buildings, 62, 63 and 64. So the total number of points increased by the points in those three buildings. Same with SSR when they added the Treehouse Villas. So total number of points equals the total number of points per unit per season per day of the week.
